Senior athletes to earn honors

Connor White was among the winners at the Pahrump Valley High School Track awards night last week. Today, all PVHS senior athletes will be recognized in an assembly at 7 p.m. in the gym.

Senior athletes at Pahrump Valley High School will be honored in a year-end assembly in the gymnasium, starting at 7 p.m. today. To be announced: The scholar male and female athletes of the year, as well as the outstanding male and female athletes of the year.

Four-year letter winners will be recognized. They include:

* Elias Armendariz, wrestling;

* Ashley Barney, fast-pitch softball;

* Cameron Belcher, boys golf;

* James Chapman, wrestling and track;

* Chelsea Cochrell, softball;

* Nicole Dillon, cross country;

* Christine Gamble, basketball and softball;

* Brittney Lindgren, soccer and basketball;

* Frank Lopez, football, wrestling, track;

* Brittney Lindgren, volleyball, basketball, softball;

* Megan Meads, basketball;

* Daniel Miller, football, baseball;

* Kyle Mills, soccer, track;

* Devyn Moen, track;

* Cody Nielsen, baseball;

* Brittany Orr, soccer, basketball;

* Emily Poertner, soccer, softball;

* Tyler Raymer, soccer;

* Courtney Salmon, girls golf, basketball;

* Gabriel Veloz, cross country;

* Iggy Wagner, soccer, baseball;

* Ethan Wald, baseball;

* Stephanie Wallace, softball;

* Corey Veloz, baseball.

A brief review of the athletics year at PVHS:

* The Trojans' girls golf team won its third consecutive state 3-A championship;

* The wrestling team won its third state title in 21 years, but its first in 3-A;

* Pahrump Valley advanced to the state semifinals in girls basketball and fast-pitch softball, both after winning Southern regional titles;

* Devyn Moen was named one of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's top 10 scholar athletes in southern Nevada;

* McKenzie Dean, a junior, won four individual state titles, one in cross country and three in track;

* Kyle Mills set a state 3-A triple jump record, as well as winning the long jump, in track;

* James Chapman and Zack Weldon won weight-class championships in wrestling;

* Ashley Rencher won the state 3-A shot put title.

Athletes on the PVHS track team were honored at an assembly in the gym last week, with three-time state 3200-meter champion McKenzie Dean and two-time state triple jump winner Kyle Mills earned most valuable awards.

Dean also won the 800- and 1600-meter titles this year, while Mills added a state title in the long jump in the state meet, contested at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno earlier this month.

Also earning honors were Ashley Rencher, state shot put champion, most improved girl; Frank Lopez, shot put, most improved boy; Shelby Hughes, Trojan Pride award for girls; Connor White, Trojan Pride, boys; Sergio Castro and Ashley Lindgren, coaches' awards.

Pahrump Valley's fast-pitch softball team held its awards program Tuesday night. The 2008 Lady Trojans shared the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League regular-season title with Las Vegas Faith Lutheran and won the regional championship before falling in the state tournament at Reno two weeks ago. The Preston Dockter-coached PV girls finished 30-9.
