BASEBALL Legion season to begin June 14

The Nevada Youth Baseball Association's American Legion Silver Division season starts tonight, with Las Vegas Western playing at Cimarron-Memorial and Legacy going to Shadow Ridge. Pahrump Valley will not begin its 20-game campaign until June 14, when it plays at Honeysuckle Park against Cimarron-Memorial in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. On June 16, Pahrump Valley travels to Las Vegas to face Eldorado in a twin bill beginning at 5 p.m. The remainder of the PV schedule: * June 18, home vs. Bishop Gorman, 5 and 8 p.m.; * June 28, At Rivera Park vs. Sierra Vista, 5 and 8 p.m.; * July 2, At Paul Meyer Field, vs. Henderson Foothill, 5 and 8 p.m.; * July 3, home vs. Henderson Coronado, 5 and 8 p.m.; * July 7, home vs. Western, 5 and 8 p.m.; * July 12, At Paul Meyer Field, vs. Legacy, 5 and 8 p.m.; * July 16, home vs. Chaparral, 5 and 8 p.m.; * July 19, At Rivera Park, vs. Shadow Ridge, 5 and 8 p.m. The regular season ends July 25, with the Silver Division playoffs slated July 29-Aug. 1 at Eldorado High School. The Silver Division champion travels to Pratt, Kan., Aug. 14-17 for the national playoffs. Other tournaments include the NYBA Junior Legion champion competing in the Mid-States event at Blair, Neb., July 31-Aug. 4, and the Gold Division State Aug. 2-9 at UNLV's Wilson Stadium. The Gold state champion advances to the regionals that run Aug. 14-18. The American Legion World Series is Aug. 22-26 at Shelby, N.C. There are 14 teams in the Gold Division: Arbor View, Basic, Bishop Gorman, Bonanza, Centennial, Coronado, Durango, Green Valley, Las Vegas, Rancho, Reno, Sierra Vista, Sierra Vista, Silverado and Spring Valley. In the 2007 season, Pahrump Valley finished ninth among 22 teams with an 11-8 record. The top four teams (which advanced to the Silver playoffs) were Rancho (19-2), Faith Lutheran (17-4), Calvary Chapel (17-4) and Sierra Vista (17-4).
