Six seniors who survived one of the toughest -- and more chaotic -- seasons in Pahrump Valley High School baseball history were honored at an awards banquet Tuesday night.

The Trojans, who finished above .500 for the first time in eight years (18-17-1), included seniors Iggy Wagner, Corey Veloz, Brandon Uyeno, Daniel Miller, Ethan Wald and Cody Nielsen.

"They were the survivors of this very tough season," said Rich Lauver, who served as interim coach over the final four weeks. In that time frame, the Trojans swept a doubleheader from Boulder City for the first time since 2000 and they ended a 29-game losing streak against Las Vegas Faith Lutheran. In fact, the Trojans left its final season in Class 3-A with back-to-back wins against the Crusaders.

Wagner, who hit .357 in league games, established a school stolen-base record with 44, breaking Lauver's 1993 mark of 40. The fleet centerfielder was first-team all-state.

Veloz, a first baseman-pitcher, batted .321; Uyeno, a pitcher-outfielder-first baseman, hit .304; Nielsen, a shortstop, was honorable mention all-state; Miller batted .451 against league rivals and was second-team all-state; Wald was a second-team all-state choice at catcher after hitting .500 and leading the team in runs scored, hits and doubles.

Wald was named most valuable player; Miller was offensive player of the year; Wagner and Nielsen were co-defensive players of the year and junior Mike Gonzalez was pitcher of the year. In 13 1/3 innings against Faith Lutheran, he surrendered just one earned run.

"It was a strange four months for the team, but these kids who finished the season never blamed anybody for the problems we had," said Lauver. In the regionals, "we battled back from 7-1 and 4-0 deficits to tie games to show the kind of character we had." The Trojans lost 12 games by three runs or less and one of their wins was a 21-12 conquest of eventual state champion Mesquite Virgin Valley.
