PLAYED ON PVHS TITLE TEAMS Biggs earns golf scholarship
By DON McDERMOTT
After playing on three state girls golf championship teams at Pahrump Valley High School, Jasper Biggs now plans to take up the sport at Biola University in the greater Los Angeles area in the fall. And she will do it as the beneficiary of a $5,000 scholarship, awarded Monday night at the Pahrump Valley High School golf awards program. The Pahrump Junior Golf Founders Association awarded the scholarship, as well as a $1,000 grant to Cameron Belcher, who played on the boys' golf team that won a Southern Nevada Class 3-A regional championship and finished second in the state finals. "It's been fun, playing on the girls' golf team; it was amazing," said Biggs, who was on the PVHS squad that won state titles in 2005, 2006 and 2007, under the direction of coach Julie Floyd. Larry Goins of the PJGFA presented the scholarship that pays the recipient $500 the first year, $1,000 the second, $1,500 the third and $2,000 the fourth. Biggs isn't sure what her major courses of study will be at Biola, a liberal arts Christian school located about 10 minutes from Disneyland. The assembly, held in the Pahrump Valley High School auditorium, also included the recognition of all of the golf programs -- the girls title team, the Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association which conducts monthly or weekly tournaments throughout the year, the Farmers Cup Adult-Junior Series and the various teams at Rosemary Clarke Middle School, as well as the varsity boys' squad. Bob Hopkins presented four individual awards, including MVP (Cameron Belcher), Coach's (Shane Lindemann), most improved (Will Peers, Anthony Franco, Daniel Shimakawa) and newcomer (Elliott Owens). Belcher was a first-team all-state golfer; receiving second-team recognition were Owens, Franco, Lindemann and Peers. The Trojans just missed repeating as an all-state academic team.
