VFW Memorial Day ceremony

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10054 will have a Memorial Day ceremony, 9 a.m. May 26 in Chief Tecopa Cemetery.

Memorial Day is a solemn day set aside to honor fallen service members. Far too often, the nation as a whole, takes the freedoms Americans enjoy for granted. Those freedoms were paid with the lives of others few of us actually knew.

On Memorial Day, America will commemorate those who made the greatest sacrifice of all -- giving one life for another.

Summer basketball

The Nye County Sports Association is back with basketball for Nye County youth.

The program is open to youth ages 7-18.

Games will be played 5-9 p.m. June 7-Aug. 15.

Registration fee is $30.

Summer hours

The Nye County School District Volunteer Coordinator Office will be open 9 a.m.-noon, only on Thursday during the summer break.

Memorial Day ceremony

In honor of Memorial Day, the Pahrump Senior Center will have a ceremonial wreath presentation 11 a.m. May 23 at the Senior Center.

After the ceremony, veterans are invited to a luncheon sponsored by the Senior Center.

DAV dinner

The Disabled American Veterans will hold the monthly dinner, 5-7 p.m. May 23 at the VFW on Homestead Road.

Everyone is welcome to drop by for Cactus Jack stew, biscuits and dessert for only $6.

All proceeds go to aide the community's disabled vets.

Summer reading program

The Pahrump Community Library will hold a summer reading program on the following schedule:

Flutter Buzzers -- age 4-5, Tuesday, 9-10 a.m.;

Creepy Crawly Critters -- age 6-11, Tuesday, 10:30-11:45 a.m. or Wednesday, 1-2:15 p.m.;

Good and (B)Ugly Bugs -- grades 5 and up, Wednesday, 2:30-3:30 p.m.

This year's theme is "Catch the Reading Bug."

The program is free and includes stories, songs, crafts and fun.

Special guest storyteller Jim Cogan, will present "Reading Bug Stories," 10 a.m. June 24.

Memorial Day service

The G.G. Sweet Veterans Memorial Park will host the annual Memorial Day service at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 26, at the park, Gamebird Road and Money Street.

The service will honor Cpl. Hazel Wagenhoffer, a Pahrump World War II veteran and Master Gunnery Sgt. Robert Heine, a Marine Corps veteran of Korea and Vietnam.

Wagenhoffer will be the first woman Marine to be interred at Sweet's Park.

Ashes of both veterans will be placed down the burial tube by family members.

The color guard will be provided by the Pahrump Valley High School JROTC and the honor guard and burial flag presentations will be performed by Las Vegas USMCR Weapons Platoon and Inspection and Instruction staff.

Garage sale fundraiser

The Rock Church will have a huge garage sale, 7-4 p.m., Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24, 2730 S. Dandelion.

Lots of appliances, furniture and miscellaneous items will be available.

All proceeds will benefit youth mission trips for The Rock Church.

Good Sam organizing

The Good Sam RV Club will have an organizational meeting to form a new chapter, 4:30 p.m. June 7 at the Bob Ruud Community Center, 150 N. Highway 160, corner of 160 and Basin Road.

Local chapters are fun, with lots of comraderie, great friends and camping.

In order to start a new chapter, there must be five persons in attendance to be officers. The only requirements are that participants be Good Sam members.
