Ghost Town celebrates
By CHARLENE DEAN
Between Beatty and Tonopah, there is a relic of the Old West in the ghost town of Goldpoint. The ghost town is a conglomeration of about 50 buildings, which like so many other ghost towns, were all but abandoned after the gold rush days. Herb Robbins, aka "Sheriff Stone," as he calls himself, has taken on the task of restoring and preserving the 100-year-old town as a legacy to the younger generation and the memory of days gone by. Besides using his own hard-earned cash, Robbins and his business partner have opened the town to visitors who share the same love of exploring ghost towns. The two have purchased and restored several cabins available for Saturday-only rental as accommodations for travelers. All the proceeds go into more restoration. This weekend is the yearly festival which brings a crowd to Robbins' little piece of heaven. There will be a Dutch oven stew contest at 1 p.m. on Saturday and a Chili Cook-Off at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Other scheduled activities are horseshoes, brothel bed races, eating contests, fun for the kids and live music provided by Stuck in Reverse, Gold Rush, The Art Jones Band and Maria. Staged skits by local gunfighters add to the entertainment. Raffle prizes will include three "Henry's;" Big Boy .45 Colt, .22 Golden Boy and .17 Golden Boy. The annual Flag Ceremony honors the fallen soldiers and is a display of several flags in a touching presentation. The Flag Ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Camping is available. The celebration starts at 8 a.m. Saturday and all proceeds will go towards further restoration and preservation. For more information, see the Web site www.goldpointghosttown.com. |
