Jim Butler Days in Tonopah

The Tonopah Chamber of Commerce has announced the schedule of events for the 38th annual Jim Butler Days celebration to be held over Memorial Day weekend.

The schedule is as follows:

The events begin Thursday, May 22, with the Talent Show getting under way at 6 p.m. at the Tonopah Convention Center.

Friday, May 23, kicks off with the crowning of the Jim Butler Days Kings at 6:30 p.m. in the Pocket Park, followed by the street dance at 7 p.m. with the Art Jones Band.

The 30th Annual Bartender/Waitress Race begins at 8:30 p.m. There will be vendors in the Pocket Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday begins with the Boy Scout Breakfast at the Tonopah Elks Lodge from 7 to 10 a.m. Adults (10 years and older), $7 and children $4.

Saturday morning's Jim Butler Days Parade on Main Street starts at 10 a.m.

This year's theme is the 100th anniversary of the Great Auto Race and our grand marshal is Jeff Mahl, the great-grandson of George Schuster, who drove the winning Thomas Flyer in the original Great Race 100 years ago.

The two winning raffle tickets for the 50/50 raffle will be drawn by the Jim Butler Days Kings prior to the start of the parade.

The Craft Fair takes place Saturday only from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Convention Center. The Art Show is in Fire Station No. 2, Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The State Championship Mining Competition begins at the Mining Park right after the parade Saturday morning. This will be a one-day event this year, featuring both professionals and amateurs and will also feature a performance by the Pahrump Gunfighters.

The Pahrump Gunfighters will be performing at various events and times throughout the entire weekend.

The "Walk the Rock" cancer fundraiser begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Gazebo on Main Street. For entry forms for this event please contact Billie or Anna at 482-5612 or 482-5912.

The Karaoke Contest, hosted by DJ Bryan, begins at the Convention Center at 6 p.m. Saturday, and there will be prizes and raffle drawings. There will be a cash bar hosted by the Tonopah Elks Lodge. Admission is $5 at the door.

The CNRA Race/Raffle will begin around 7 p.m. at the track.

The Saturday Night Dance, hosted by DJ Bryan, begins at 9:00 p.m. at the Convention Center; admission is $5 at the door. There is half-price admission for anyone showing a ticket stub from that night's CNRA races.

The cash bar will be hosted by the Tonopah Elks Lodge and there will also be a raffle drawing. Sunday morning begins with the Boy Scout Breakfast at the Elks Lodge from 8 to 10 a.m.

The Art Show is open Sunday, from 10 a.m until 1 p.m. in Fire Station No. 2.

The Pahrump Gunfighters will be performing in the Pocket Park throughout the day.

The Chili Cook-Off begins at 1 p.m. at the Pocket Park and the judging will be completed and the chili will be for sale by 1:30 p.m.

The Arm Wrestling Competition begins on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Pocket Park. The drawing for the Jim Butler Days raffle begins at 2 p.m. at the Pocket Park and the grand prize 50-ounce silver bar donated by Cow County Title, as well as many other prizes donated by local merchants, will be awarded at that time.

Plans are also under way for a Stargazing Party Sunday evening, to be hosted by the Tonopah Astronomical society. The time and place will be announced at a later date.

Also, raffle tickets, garters, buttons and T-shirts are for sale at many local merchants.
