TWO-PERSON GABBS TEAM SCORES 20 POINTS Beatty's Turner, 4x400 team win titles
By DON McDERMOTT
RENO -- Beatty has a long, storied history in track. A couple chapters were added to that substantial volume here last weekend. Anthony Turner, a freshman sprinter, won the Nevada Class A 400-meter dash rather easily Friday on the hot Damonte Ranch High School quarter-mile all-weather oval. His time was as sizzling as the weather -- 0:52.92 -- as he defeated Spring Mountain's Shawn Clay by almost a second (53.83). Later Friday, Beatty's 4x400-meter relay team of Chriscel Rankin, Jennifer Mutz, Kaci Schroeder and Jennifer Porte won in even more dominating fashion. The two seniors (Rankin, Porte) and two sophomores (Mutz, Schroeder) did the four laps in 4:38.88, beating Jackpot by almost 16 seconds (4:54.58). "We haven't been together all season; we had a girl get injured, but we have been winning like this most of the season," said Rankin. The Hornets' team, coached by Jerry and Connie Adcock, along with Bruce Moen, had as many as 32 members this spring and made an impact wherever it competed. The Beatty girls scored 35 points to finish ninth among 22 teams represented at the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association-sanctioned meet that concluded the 2008 season. Laughlin was first with 126 points, well ahead of Smith Valley's 59; Las Vegas Calvary Chapel had 51, Austin 51, Wells 50, Carlin 48, Round Mountain 47 and Reno Sage Ridge 45 to finish ahead of the Hornets. Besides Round Mountain, Gabbs' solo girl entry, Cindy Holmgren had 10 points with a third-place finish in the shot put (29 feet, 7 1/2 inches) and a fifth in the discus (90-5). Tonopah's Lady Muckers had eight points; Taneesha Knight was eighth in the 100-meter hurdles and the 4x200-meter relay team was sixth. For Round Mountain, Katrena Akers won the triple jump at 32-11 1/4, was third in the 400 at 1:05.03 and was third in the long jump at 14-2. Round Mountain, with Octavia Akers, Jessica Smith, Tiffani Ramos and K. Akers, was third in the 4x400 in 4:55.43 and seventh in the 4x800 in 13:02.19. Ramos, O. Akers, Callie Dorn and Smith ran for the Muckers. Dorn was second in the shot put at 29-9 1/4. Besides Turner's 10 points in the 400, the Hornets scored 19 1/2 other points as Beatty was 12th out of 22 teams. Beatty's 4x100 team of Chris Payton, Turner, David Tom and Jose Mendoza was third in 0:46.95, with its 4x400 quartet of Turner, Tom, Mendoza and Tony Dare second in 3:40.73. In the pole vault, Matt Kearns was fifth at 9-0, with Payton sixth at 8-6. In the 1-A boys' team title chase, Las Vegas Calvary Chapel had 114 1/2 points, edging the 107 1/2 accumulated by Spring Mountain. Reno Sierra Lutheran had 45 1/2, Carlin 39, Reno Sage Ridge 37, Owyhee 36, Las Vegas Trinity 36, Lund 34, Eureka 33, Pahranagat Valley Alamo 32 and Smith Valley 30. Tonopah had 21 points, with Gabbs netting 10 and Round Mountain 3 to complete the list of Nye County's 1-A teams scoring. Kevin Valentine paced the Muckers with a second-place finish in the 800 (2:06.98) and fourth in the triple jump (37-7 1/4). Tommy Thompson was sixth in the long jump (17-7), fourth in the shot put (40-3 1/4) and seventh in the discus (105-5) for Gabbs' Tarantulas. Gabbs had 16 high school and 35 elementary/junior high students this academic-athletics year. |
