Dogs running loose

On April 9 at 3:30 a.m., my three pet geese were viciously attacked in our front, fenced yard by neighborhood dogs.

Hearing the commotion, I flung the door open and tried to run the dogs off our property.

As they went under the fence, they spun around and "faced off" with me, growling, barking and snarling while still on our driveway.

I ran into the house and grabbed my gun. Being still there, I aimed at the sound and fired one shot.

My husband had already called animal control.

Supervisor Tim McCarty responded and with much determination, he traced down the owner and was able to acquire important information.

Since the attack I have grieved the loss of one of my "goose girls." One too many, I shouldn't be counting.

Dog owners, please keep your dogs in your own yard. To the neighbor whose dogs are still running the streets -- with gun in hand, I will not miss next time.

Thanks again, Tim McCarty, and All Creatures Animal Hospital.

God bless Kevin

God bless Kevin Pape and his great staff at Wal-Mart.

On Saturday, May 3, a Wal-Mart employee came into the public library looking for a missing 10-year-old boy.

Our library is located about one-half-mile from Wal-Mart, so this employee was going above and beyond the call of duty when he came into the library looking for the boy.

I was impressed. Greatly impressed.

Thank God, the boy was eventually found.

Thank you, Kevin, for a job well done -- as a manager and as a human being.

Check the facts on incorporation

After reading the May 7 front-page article of the PVT concerning the incorporation garbage, this has the smell of the same group that was behind it before.

The people of Pahrump better wake up. Please take the time to check out all the facts. See what incorporating a town will really cost us and what it means.

I made a trip to the assessor's office to see if there was a chance that since our property was being devaluated, they might consider lowering our taxes.

They said no way. Our state tax cap is limited to 3 percent now. That is unless the powers that be decide they need more monies, which they have been known to do.

I've always heard from those in favor of incorporating that Tonopah gets most of our monies. Not so.

The assessor's office said most of it stays here in Pahrump. Good news.

I've also been informed to incorporate a town there is a whole book of rules.

We'll need a mayor, manager, commissioners, police department, sidewalks, streetlights, a sewer system and God only knows what else they will spring on us.

Whoo boys; just who is going to pay for this? All this bureaucracy -- or is this going to be one gigantic freebie? Please wake up and see what could be ahead in this direction.

I've always heard how great Mesquite is, because it's an incorporated town. I don't know about that. I had a look at the Mesquite paper and they are having all kinds of big-time problems.

Until our country gets back in a better economic situation, and it doesn't look like it will happen very soon, we shouldn't bring any more financial indebtedness upon ourselves. Before this issue comes to a vote, check the facts.

If we really want to help improve this town, it would help if people would take an interest in their property and clean it up. Many areas are really deplorable, and it's a shame. This would only cost a little elbow grease and the rewards wold be great.

What is going on with officials?

What the heck is going on with the Nevada elected officials? All I ever seem to read is how much more needs to be cut from the education system in our state, because of the state budget.

Now our governor has kept his word about raising taxes for the big corporate world, but at what cost to the middle class worker?

I can only speak for myself when I say private schooling for my kids just isn't going to happen, because the money is just not there.

As parents, our elected governor is saying thanks for putting me in office, but now your kids can pay the price with a shorter school year or larger classes.

How much lower will Nevada rate because of these cuts to our educational system when the next national education rating system comes out? Last in the country.

I say it's time for all middle class workers to stand up and be counted. I say enough, to the crap that's being forced down our throat by our elected official.

He can't even take care of his own family problems, and he expects to be able to handle ours. I think not.

If each middle class worker would just vote in every election, both local and national, and forget about the party crap, and vote for officials that will stand up for us all. Then we can take back our country.

I would bet to say that each and every one of us has had some person say to them that "their vote doesn't matter." That's just beans or pure laziness in my opinion.

Most of the ones not voting are parents with kids in our school system, and it's their kids and mine that will have to pay the price in the future. Let's not forget that the kids are the future for all communities.

Retired folks are there every election, standing up for themselves. I give two thumbs up to all retired voters, you folks rock.

We in middle class outnumber the rich in everything but the cash.

Yes, I know that cash is a big part of life, but so are numbers, and by voting and calling, you are showing elected officials by numbers that we are through taking it in the pants for the corporate world and they had better stand true to their word, or come next election they're gone.

Competitors could use help

Recently a group of kids from Beatty High School represented Amargosa Valley and Beatty in a state competition for FCCLA, the Family Community and Career Leaders of America.

They did very well in the competitions and won in two categories, which gives them the right to compete in the national competition.

As Nye County residents, we should be proud of their work and talent. This is the first time that kids from Nevada will be national competitors for FCCLA, but they need help to get there.

They have to raise enough money to cover air fare, meals and lodging for the event in Orlando, Fla. this summer.

While they have had bake sales, car washes and work very hard at fundraising on their own, they are running out of time and have all but exhausted local resources.

I personally have donated both time and money to try and get them to Orlando. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to this very worthwhile group.
