Nye County School Board President Dennis Keating took a moment to recognize Nye County teachers in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week at the board's Thursday, May 8 meeting.

"I would like to extend recognition to all the teachers and staff of the Nye County School District on a job well done," Keating said.

* Also at the meeting, Max Buffi, recently appointed principal of Pahrump Valley High School and still principal of Pathways, the district's alternative education program, was approved for a 5 percent raise in salary in light of his dual administrative roles.

* Minor changes to the district's parent/student handbook were also approved by the board.

Testing and Accountability Coordinator Ginger Olsen reminded the board each school has its own handbook to supplement the district's, and the handbook was written for use both by students and parents.

* Dona Descamps was appointed as principal of J.G. Johnson Elementary School for the next academic year. She will replace Holly Lepisto, who has been named principal of the new Floyd Elementary School that will open in the fall.

Since Descamps is board member Kevin Pape's mother-in-law, her approval had to be unanimous and with the consent of Superintendent Rob Roberts.
