Call 751-4279 for more information. Fashion show The Red Hot and Purple Passionate Pahrumpians will have a fashion show 10-1 p.m. May 17, at Desert Greens clubhouse. Fashions will be presented by Sunflower Fashions. A speaker from the Las Vegas American Heart Association will discuss strokes and heart health for women over 50. Tickets are $10 and $5 of that will go to the American Heart Association. Refreshments and snacks will be served. Vendors for Chili Cook-off The Chamber of Commerce still has space open for vendors to sell their wares at the Chili Cook-off on May 17. In addition to the cook-off there will be a Civil War reenactment, food, entertainment and fun for the whole family. Booth space is $30. Babies in need Stitches From the Heart needs volunteers to knit, crochet or quilt blankets, little sweaters and hats for babies in need. These items are donated to hospitals all over the country. Bowl-a-thon fundraiser The Desert View Regional Medical Center volunteer auxiliary will sponsor a bowl-a-thon to help raise money for the installation of a memorial/healing garden at the hospital. The event will be held 10-3 p.m. May 18 at the Nugget Bowl. The cost is $20 per person and the fee includes shoes and three games of bowling. All ages are welcome. A charitable donation of $15 may be deducted on taxes. Drawings will be held every hour, tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Bilingual story time A bilingual story time for ages 2-10 will be offered, 10-11 a.m. June 13-Aug. 1 at the Pahrump Community Library. Self-defense class The Nye County Sheriff's Office and Homeland Heroes will offer two opportunities to take the two-day women's self-defense class free of charge. The classes will be 8-4 p.m. May 22 and 23 at the Desert View Regional Medical Center, or June 12 and 13 at Bob Ruud Community Center. The no-nonsense class is taught by Nye County law enforcement officers. Participants will learn what to watch for and how to be aware of their surroundings; what to do if surprised by an attack; how to get away from an attacker; what not to do when attacked; what to do when attacked and how to neutralize an attacker. Art & Sol at the Nugget The 14th annual Art & Sol will take place Memorial Day weekend 10-5 p.m. Saturday May 24 and 10-4 p.m. Sunday, May 25 at the Pahrump Nugget. Admission is free. Book signing Author Michael Hazard will be at the Pahrump Community Library 10-2 p.m. May 24 to sign his book, "The Sea's Fury: Rescue at Point Serenity." Sweet Veterans Memorial Park will host the annual Memorial Day service at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 26, at the park, Gamebird Road and Money Street. The service will honor Cpl. Hazel Wagenhoffer, a Pahrump World War II veteran and Master Gunnery Sgt. Robert Heine, a Marine Corps veteran of Korea and Vietnam. Wagenhoffer will be the first woman Marine to be interred at Sweet's Park. Ashes of both veterans will be placed down the burial tube by family members. The color guard will be provided by the Pahrump Valley High School JROTC and the honor guard and burial flag presentations will be performed by Las Vegas USMCR Weapons Platoon and I and I staff. AARP special promotion AARP Driver Safety Program will have a class 9-1 p.m. May 28-29. A special promotion allows AARP members to register for $10 and bring a friend free of charge.
