FISHING
QUAGGA REMINDER: With the ice melting on northern waters, anglers are preparing their boats for the trip north and the Nevada Department of Wildlife is asking boaters to take the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of quagga mussels from the Colorado River system to other waters. Thoroughly clean, drain and dry your boat, trailer and towing vessel before traveling to another water. EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR Small planters are making up the bulk of the catch though there are bigger rainbow and tiger trout in this Lincoln County water. The fish have been a little finicky of late, but PowerBait and silver Kastmasters produced bites over the weekend. ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR Crappie are spawning and taking bait along the south side of the reservoir. Trout fishing is fair. LAKE MEAD Fishing pressure has been heavy in the Vegas Bay arm of the Lake, but anglers are still catching stripers and catfish. Shad are moving in and out of the shallows where they can be netted and used for bait. As a reminder -- the legal radius for a shad net is only three feet. Stripers are taking cut bait and catfish are hitting night crawlers or stink bait. Fishing along the beaches is hit-and-miss. Anglers in the Overton arm are finding good action for striped bass. LAKE MOHAVE Despite throwing just about everything a tackle box can hold, anglers fishing Willow Beach and downstream as far as mile marker 42 found slow action for both striped and largemouth bass over the weekend. Shore anglers looking for stocked rainbow trout found success when fishing with PowerBait below south of the picnic tables. Anglers fishing out of Cottonwood Cove are finding fair to good action from shore as well as from boats. Trolling with anchovies in 20 to 80 feet of water is yielding the most success, though some anglers are catching fish while casting top-water lures and jerkbaits. Stillfishing with prepared baits has been only moderately successful. Big fish honors were taken by a 5.74-pound largemouth bass during a recent tournament. LAUGHLIN Small stripers and catfish are taking bait fished along Casino Row. Trout fishermen are still catching a few rainbow trout while working the Colorado River from the bridge south. WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA Anglers have found typical spring fishing conditions on each of the three main reservoirs - Haymeadow, Cold Springs and Adams McGill. Fishing has been good for 14- to 16-inch rainbow trout, but windy conditions have made things tough at times. Popular fly patterns include an olive Woolly Bugger or a Prince Nymph. Bait anglers generally do well with PowerBait or worms. URBAN PONDS The Nevada Department of Wildlife plans on stocking catfish in the ponds at Floyd Lamb Park, Lorenzi Park, Sunset Park, Veterans Memorial Park, and Hafen Park (Mesquite) later this month. Following the first plant in April anglers reported good action for feisty whisker fish. Stink baits and night crawlers can be productive. Though the action has slowed considerably, trout are still taking PowerEggs and various fly patterns. Be patient and fish early mornings and late afternoons. |
