Windrock Ranch proudly supports 4-H
By MARY BALDASANO
The Windrock Ranch, a member of the Intermountain Farmers Association (IFA), is a huge supporter of valley 4-H groups. It gives a 10 percent discount on products, members are allowed to use ranch activity areas (arena, 50-foot pen, wash racks and more) as well as stage competitive events at the facility. Other support to 4-H groups includes event prizes, donations, tack, and feed. Located at 4779 W. Bell Vista Ave. (six miles west of Highway 160), you can't miss the place for the store is the only bright red building in that area. Some 4-H competitions include barrel racing, "key hole," in which the participant runs a horse straight out and back as fast as possible), fastest runner wins. All ages participate in these events and have won many awards. Recent events included the Clark County Fair held at Logandale. An area for 4-H meetings is provided free of charge. A big event held in Pahrump is the Gymkhana, which includes competitions such as the key hole. Group participations that involve other animals such as goats, sheep, pigs and more are the Fall Festival, Pow Wow along with others held in Tonopah and other state events. Ranch owner Ken DeVries, daughter Sandra Norman and her husband Gary actively work the ranch and the store by selling IFA products and others to local and county farmers. DeVries said, "We are a family owned and operated business. We have lived in Pahrump since 1996 and started selling animal feed in 2003, and opened the store in 2005." Part of the history of the ranch is their breeding of Peruvian horses. DeVries' daughter and grandchildren (both 4-H members) ride and show their horses in the arena. All started riding at the age of 4 and 5. Each has won several competition ribbons. Grass bales come from California, Utah and Nevada. They include orchard, rye, brome, timothy, Bermuda as well as the alfalfa. The store also stocks hay pellets that are 100 percent feed. Other items sold by the store include horse panels, stalls, dog runs, goat and sheep panels, and several sizes of wire fencing, Pace American enclosed trailers and Big Tex utility and commercial trailers.
