PREP TRACK PVHS gears for Southern 3-A regionals
By DON McDERMOTT
Establishing personal-best times and getting relay teams organized were the primary objectives of Pahrump Valley High School track coach Andy Schneider this week. With no mid-week meet to interrupt the workouts, Schneider prepared the Trojans for their appearance in The Meadows Invitational at Las Vegas Saturday. The meet begins at 10 a.m. on the Mustangs' all-weather quarter-mile oval. The Meadows is the traditional regular-season closing event and attracts a high number of Class A and 2-A athletes, who join their 3-A rivals for one of the more competitive meets of the spring. While the smaller schools look to record good qualifying times, distances and heights, the 3-A athletes are fine-tuning their starts, jumps, throws and vaults. The Southern Nevada 3-A, 2-A and 1-A regionals are May 9-10 at Moapa Valley High School in Overton. While the top three in 3-A will move on to the state champions May 16-17 at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno, the top four in 2-A and 1-A will advance. Several Pahrump Valley athletes already rank among the top 3-A performers in Nevada, according to statistics on the Web site, www.nevadatrack.org. The list includes: * Ashley Lindgren, the highest-ranked 3-A sprinter in the 100-meter dash (0:12.8), 200 (0:26.4) and 400 (0:58.9) and first in the long jjmp at 15 feet, 9 inches; * McKenzie Dean, the 3-A leader in the 800 (2:29.35), 1600 (5:28.57) and 3200 (11:59.06); * Tee Tee Hughes, tops in 3-A in the 100-meter hurdles (0:16.66) and second in the 300 hurdles in 0:50.0; * Stephanie Manley, second among 3-A triple jumpers at 32 feet; * Ashley Rencher, first in the state in the shot put at 42 feet, 1-3/4 inches and second in the discus at 125-3.
