After nearly a year of research and work, the Pahrump Incorporation Advisory Board will hold a series of public meetings to inform the public about its findings and answer questions.

The meetings will feature a PowerPoint presentation on incorporation and an informative brochure with frequently asked questions and answers.

The seven-member advisory board was formed by the Pahrump Town Board in April 2007, making this third incorporation attempt in the town's history the first one with official support from the local government.

From the first meeting, the advisory board made its objective clear: It would write a report exploring both the pros and the cons of incorporation and present a recommendation to the town board.

In addition, the panel was determined to ensure the public had plenty of information about the process and the costs of incorporating.

Sixteen years ago, incorporation was brought to the ballot and soundly defeated by 61 percent of the voters.

The issue resurfaced again in 1995 only to be defeated by a slightly larger margin of 63 percent.

Five years later, cityhood was defeated once again by the county, with 5,500 Nye County residents voting against it and 3,695 voters supporting it.

But voting is just the first step in the long journey of incorporation.

Even if the issue makes it past the ballot and is voted for by residents, the county and state legislatures would still need to give their nod of approval as well.

For now, all meetings listed are open to the public and it will then be up to the town board to decide how it will respond to the advisory board's recommendations.
