VEA awards scholarships
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Valley Electric Association announced the recipients of four scholarships at its last meeting at the Beatty Community Center April 19. Devyn Moen, Pahrump Valley High School, was awarded an academic scholarship for $1,000 each year of her four-year education. Moen has applied to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and intends to major in biology in hopes of becoming a dermatologist. A second academic scholarship was given to Caitlin Swale, also a Pahrump Valley High School student. Swale has been accepted to the Colorado School of Mines and will major in mechanical engineering. "I plan on using my math and science skills to work in robotics as part of the entertainment industry," Swale wrote. Karli Rust of Beatty High School walked away with a $1,000 per-year vocational/technical scholarship that will help her achieve her ambition of being a cosmetologist. Rust has applied to Prater Way Beauty School in Reno. Chrissy Ohlinger, a freelance writer for the PVT, was awarded a $500 continuing education scholarship to help fund her education at the Institute of Children's Literature in West Redding, Conn. Ohlinger, who is also a substitute teacher at Rosemary Clarke Middle School, wrote, "I want to connect writing with children ... It's been a lifelong passion of mine." "She showed up at our door with a list of stories already in hand," said editor Mark Smith. "Chrissy continues to fulfill all her requirements. It was a great pleasure to submit a letter in her support." The scholarship applicants had to have either parents who were members of VEA or were members themselves and be enrolled at an accredited educational or training institution as a full-time student or, in the case of continuing education, as a part-time student in a declared degree path. |
