Valley Cruisers 'Show and Shine' in April

These photos are examples of how beautifully "tricked-out" the show cars at the annual "Show and Shine" can be. The event takes place beginning at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 19 at Petrack Park.

Car enthusiasts will have a heyday when The Valley Cruisers of Pahrump sponsor the 13th annual Over the Hump to Pahrump Show and Shine and auto parts swap meet April 19 at Petrack Park.

Every year, the car show attracts more entries in the rather large car show than it did the year before. This year they are expecting between 120 and 170 spiffed up showpieces to roll into Petrack Park.

"The main attraction is the car show," said Ken Hargis, President of the Valley Cruisers of Pahrump. "The swap meet is a very small part of it."

Visitors to the event should number between 500 and 1,000, stated Hargis. "We really never know."

Red tape of one sort or another is hampering the effort this year. "First we had to change the date,' said Hargis. The show was supposed to be held April 26, but he said the date conflicted with another event and the club "didn't want to step on anyone's toes."

The second stumble came with recent regulations regarding outdoor events held on Pahrump facilities.

Apparently the expense of setting up a vendor booth outweighs possible profits. "We're having a hard time getting vendors this year," Hargis said. "Usually we have 30 or so vendors ... so far this year, I have three." I'm not the only one having problems," he added. "I won't mention names, but I've talked to a few and heard about others with the same problem."

The car show and swap meet is always for a benefit. Last year, the Valley Cruisers donated $3100 to Pahrump Valley High School for the band department. "The 'Cruisers' was founded in 1995," said Hargis. "We've been putting on this car show for 13 years, and all of those shows have been to benefit a charity. This year it's Special Olympics." The charitable donation from the car club always goes to a youth organization.

"I've seen the donation as low as $1,000," said Hargis. "But we do what we can ... We'll see."

Early registration for entering a car in the show begins at 6 p.m., April 18 and will resume 7 a.m. to noon the day of the show.

The car show itself starts at 8 a.m. Saturday morning and continues until 4 p.m.

Donations to the Special Olympics can be made to Valley Cruisers, P.O. Box 5535, Pahrump, NV 89041.

Call 910-3076 or 727-6242 for more information or to lease vendor space.
