DV Chamber holds art show at Furnace Creek
By CHARLENE DEAN
The Death Valley Chamber of Commerce will hold quite an art show April 12-13 around the pool area at the Furnace Creek Inn and Ranch Resort in Death Valley. Some very well known artists will come from diverse areas such as, Bishop, Barstow, the Eastern Sierra, Long Beach (all in California) and Utah will come together to show and sell a wide variety of artwork. The artists include: Cheryl Winstead produces beautiful hand-woven wall hangings, scarves and shawls from her loom. Kathi Hilton is the daughter of the well-known painter John W. Hilton, recognized for his desert scenes. She shares her father's love of the desert, and her style confirms "she learned to paint at her father's easel," so to speak. Behind the desk at the visitors center in Death Valley National Park hang a pair of paintings by father and daughter. Daryl Aukee is a self-taught jeweler with a unique sense of design. His creations are all one-of-a-kind pieces created from different metals such as silver, brass, copper and gold. His studio is located adjacent to his home in the town of Bishop, Calif. Ron and Nancy Overholtz are also from Bishop. Each has their own medium for producing one-of-a kind artworks. Nancy is a watercolor artist inspired by the scenic beauty of the mountains and desert near her home. Her skill with watercolors shows the sharp contrasts in nature's art. Ron is a skilled wood turner. He uses his talent to bring out the gorgeous grain and highlight the beauty of imperfection in decorative vessels and wall sculpture. Wally Pacholka is an "astro-photographer." His chosen subject is the blink-of-en-eye event happening light years away with a darkened sky as the backdrop. He has won numerous awards from national magazines such as Life and Time, and his work has been published in National Geographic Magazine. Olaf Doud produces petroglyph-based rock art. Ken Willingham produces hand-thrown stoneware and porcelain pottery. Alexander Reid will offer stone sculptures. Pauline Kothman, a Yorok/Pauite Native, designs authentic jewelry from natural materials, and Whitney Walsh shows her artistic talent in gorgeous hand-designed gourd art. The show hours are 10-5 p.m. April 12 and 10-3 p.m. on Sunday. Timing is everything and this time of year is perfect for sight-seeing, history tours or dinner and an overnight stay at the resort.
