Sixth Earth Day, clean-up on the way

The arrival of spring is often heralded with people giving their home a good "spring cleaning."

Here in Pahrump, spring is also a chance for residents to give their corner of the Earth its own spring cleaning and learn how to keep it clean thanks to the annual Earth Day celebration held in conjunction with the town clean-up.

Saturday, April 19 will be the town's sixth annual Earth Day celebration, which has become more popular and had more participants every year.

As in previous years, the event will be hosted by the Nuclear Waste and Environmental advisory board in conjunction with many community organizations and local businesses.

The celebration will held in Honeysuckle Park and begin at 10 a.m. and last until 4 p.m., featuring live music, a cookout, activities just for kids, and educational exhibits to help residents learn to take care of the planet every day.

"This year we are emphasizing recycling and waste reduction," John Pawlak, event organizer said. "It is a real shame to see how much trash is thrown away every day when most of the stuff is a resource that can be recycled."

The park event is a chance for residents to learn about environmental issues specific to the Pahrump Valley.

The Nevada Department of Environmental Protection will be on hand to educate participants about dust pollution and the county's fugitive dust ordinances.

There will also be experts on hand to answer questions about alternate energy usage, such as solar and wind power.

For those tired of looking out the window and seeing litter on the road and abandoned trash in the desert, Earth Day offers a perfect opportunity to take action and help clean up the town.

The Town Clean-Up allows teams of people to be assigned to specific areas of town and abolish litter and trash to its rightful place (in this case, strategically placed dumpsters courtesy of Pahrump Valley Disposal).

To register a team to help beautify and cleanse Pahrump, contact the Chamber of Commerce at 775-727-5800.

Local businesses and civic groups have also been invited to sponsor a booth.

For more information about setting up shop at Earth Day, contact Pawlak at 702-767-0678 or David Swanson at 775-513-9710.
