Leo Verzilli, the new football coach at Pahrump Valley High School, announced that an organizational meeting of parents and athletes will be held at 6 p.m., April 2 in the main gym.

"Parents and athletes should bring pencil and paper to the meeting," said Verzilli. "Some important dates will be announced."

Some dates have already been announced by the Clark County School District, which schedules games for all of the schools in the Class 4-A divisions. Pahrump Valley will be in the Sunset Region Southwest Division, along with Bonanza, Clark, Desert Oasis (a new high school), Durango, Sierra Vista, Spring Valley, Western and Nevada 4-A state champion Bishop Gorman.

The CCSD dates are Aug. 14, first day of non-contact drills; Aug. 18, first day of contact practice, Aug. 23, first day for scrimmages and Aug. 26, first possible day for a regular-season game.

Pahrump Valley will open the season Sept. 5 at home against Desert Oasis; kickoff is at 7 p.m. The Trojans play at Class 3-A Las Vegas Faith Lutheran Sept. 12, then open Southwest Division play Sept. 19 at Bonanza.

Other home games are Sept. 26, vs. Western, Oct. 10, vs. Clark; Oct. 17, vs. Spring Valley and Oct. 30, vs. Sierra Vista.

Verzilli was an assistant coach in 2007, when the Trojans went 0-8-1 for deposed head coach Brian Hug and interim coach Roy Goodell. The Trojans were 3-7 under Hug in 2006, including a 20-10 loss to Overton Moapa Valley in the first round of the 3-A playoffs.

The 2005 Trojans, then coached by Steve Nygaard, won the Southern 3-A League regular-season title, but lost to eventual state champion Mesquite Virgin Valley in the playoffs.

For many years, Verzilli helped produce several successful football teams at Rosemary Clarke Middle School -- at the same time he was operating Archie's Restaurant.
