Who's on spring break? Not PVHS
By DON McDERMOTT
Spring break doesn't mean Pahrump Valley High School athletes will have the entire week to sit around and play video games. In fast-pitch softball, coach Preston Dockter will take his 10-2 Lady Trojans to Kingman, Ariz., for a tournament Friday and Saturday. The PV girls will play at least four games over those two days, starting at 2:30 p.m. Friday against Class 4-A power Henderson Liberty. Also in the tournament field -- which will generate 23 games in two days -- are Beaver Dam (Utah), Parker (Ariz.), Las Vegas Durango, Coconino, Lake Havasu, Henderson Foothill, Window Rock, Las Vegas Rancho, Needles (Calif.) and host Kingman. Games will begin at 2:30 p.m. on four fields Friday and on four fields at 9 a.m. Saturday. The title game is at 3 p.m. (MST) Saturday. Coach Doug Marion's baseball team, 7-4 after going 2-2 in the Del Sol Invitational in Las Vegas, is at Eldorado High School Friday. The first pitch is at 7 p.m. In the Del Sol tournament Friday, Pahrump Valley defeated the host Dragons 6-3 behind the combined five-hit pitching of Danny Cazier and Cody Nielsen. Saturday, the Trojans lost 8-7 to Chaparral, which scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning, then trounced Las Vegas Mojave 13-1 as Corey Veloz pitched a two-hitter. Saturday, the Trojans lost 8-2 in the semifinals to Henderson Basic, which went on to win the title. Pahrump Valley's track team, under the direction of coach Andy Schneider, is in the Las Vegas Classic Friday and Saturday at Del Sol High School, site of the 2007 state 3-A championships. The meet begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday. Coach Bob Hopkins' boys golf team is in a Southern Nevada Class 3-A League match, hosted by Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, Thursday at 11 a.m. The Trojans have finished second to Faith in two earlier league matches. On Tuesday, Pahrump Valley's baseball and softball teams will be at home to play Overton Moapa Valley in the 3-A league openers. The twin bills start at 1 p.m. On April 5, the baseball team travels to Ridgecrest, Calif., to take on Burroughs in a non-league doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. The softball team will resume action April 8 at home against league rival Boulder City (1 p.m.). In track Tuesday, PVHS is at Liberty for a mid-week meet, and on April 8, the Trojans will compete in a multiple-team invitational at Boulder City. The Trojans host the Rotary Invitational April 11. The golfers are at Needles, Calif., April 2 and travel to Mesquite for another 3-A match April 9. Beatty was to play baseball and fast-pitch softball at Mesquite Virgin Valley Tuesday; Monday, the Hornets are at Trona, Calif. |
