Jesse R. Burns

Jesse R. Burns, 84, left this life March 13, 2008.

He was born Aug. 23, 1923, in Centerville, Mo., into a large family of five brothers and one sister.

His family moved around, following available work during the Great Depression, ending up in Roundup, Mont.

Times were hard, but Jesse was determined to complete his education. Even when he was a young boy, he would run away from his family to find odd jobs; using the money to pay for clothing and other school needs. He always returned home just in time to start the new school year. His diligence earned him high school graduation and three years of college.

Jesse served in the U.S. Army 1943-46.

In 1943, he met and married his first and only love Joyce J. Bellei. They welcomed their only child, Carolyn, into the world in 1949.

Jesse was recalled into the U.S. Air Force in 1950, where he served for over 20 years. During that time, he fought in three wars; World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He moved his family 14 times to different states and he fulfilled assignments in four foreign countries. Jesse retired from the military in 1967.

After his retirement, he and Joyce moved to Oregon, where Jesse worked at odd jobs for another 16 years. In 1983, he and Joyce sold their home and all their belongings and bought a 5th-wheel trailer. They traveled the U.S. and Canada.

After meeting some wonderful people and seeing a lot of the country, they ended their travels in Las Vegas, where they lived for 23 years.

The final move to Pahrump was in 2006 to be with his beloved daughter Carolyn and her husband Jim.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Joyce J. Burns; daughter Carolyn (Jim) Axtell of Pahrump; grandsons Richard A. Axtell of Eagle River, Alaska and Robert J. Axtell of Anchorage, Alaska;

Great-granddaughters Krysta L. Axtell of Anchorage, Lauren R. and Nicole H. Axtell of Eagle River; great-grandson Nicholas R. Axtell of Anchorage and step great-granddaughter Jewelen Bennett of Eagle River.
