Trojans strong in Palo Verde track meet

LAS VEGAS -- With five Class 4-A opponents going against them, Pahrump Valley's track teams held their own in the Palo Verde Spring Break Championships Tuesday at Palo Verde.

Coach Andy Schneider's boys and girls squads each finished third and had athletes place in the top five in 30 of 36 events.

The boys totaled 103 1/2 points to finish behind Palo Verde (175) and Cimarron-Memorial (123) and place ahead of Valley (94), Durango (72 1/2) and Bishop Gorman (51 1/2). Class 2-A Ely White Pine had 40 1/2 points.

The Lady Trojans scored 127 points, with Cimarron-Memorial first with 182 1/2 and Palo Verde second at 132. Valley had 86 1/2, Gorman 53 1/2, Durango 43 and White Pine 39.

Kyle Mills paced the boys by winning the long jump (21 feet, 6 3/4 inches) and triple jump (44-3).

Anderson Floyd was fourth in the 200-meter dash (0:23.9) and 400 (0:53.6). Sergio Castro was third in the 400 (0:52.8).

Michael Kraut was fifth in the 110 high hurdles (0:17.8) and 300 hurdles (0:47.3). Greg Shippee was third in the 300 in 0:46.1.

Pahrump Valley placed in all four relay races. The 4x100 unit was fourth in 0:47.3; the 4x200 team was fifth in 1:38.7; the 4x400 quartet was fifth in 3:52.7, and in the 4x800, the Trojans were third in 9:41.6.

Alex Anderson was fifth in the triple jump at 38-3; Shaun Johnson cleared 5-9 in the high jump to place third; James Chapman was second in the pole vault at 11-6, with Elias Armendariz fourth at 10-6.

Ashley Rencher, continuing a strong early spring series of performances, won the shot put at 33-5 and discus at 103-10 and McKenzie Dean was first in the 800 in 2:32.9 and 3200 in 12:27.0.

Freshman Ashley Lindgren won the 200 in 0:27.2, was second in the 400 in 1:04.2 and fourth in the 100 in 0:13.8.

Pahrump Valley was second in the 4x800 in 12:21.6, third in the 4x100 in 0:55.5, third in the 4x200 in 1:58.6 and fifth in the 4x400 in 5:08.3.

Stephanie Manley was fourth in the long jump at 14-1 and fifth in the triple jump at 29-6 1/2.

Bethani Jackson tied for fourth in the pole vault at 7-0.

Pahrump Valley will compete in the Las Vegas Classic at Del Sol High School March 28-29.

In baseball, it was announced that Rich Lauver has quit as varsity assistant coach, a couple days after the Trojans boosted their 2008 record to 7-2 with a 13-2 rout of homestanding Hurricane, Utah.

The Doug Marion-coached Trojans are playing in the Del Sol Invitation today and Saturday, after taking on the host Dragons Thursday.

Today, PVHS played Mojave at 8 a.m. at Del Sol; at 12:30 p.m., the Trojans go to Chaparral. Saturday's games are in brackets, starting at 8 a.m.

Pahrump Valley's fast-pitch softball team crushed homestanding Las Vegas Bonanza 11-2 Tuesday, boosting its record to 10-2. Ashleah Barney, a senior righthander, was the winning pitcher against that Sunset Region Southwest Division Class 4-A team.

Coach Preston Dockter's girls go to Kingman, Ariz., for a tournament March 28-29, then open their Southern Nevada Class 3-A League campaign at home against Overton Moapa Valley April 1.
