Firefighters move for property cleanup
By RICHARD STEPHENS
The Beatty Volunteer Fire Department is initiating nuisance abatement proceedings on Owens Trailer Park. Firefighter Mike Lasorsa gained the support for the action from the Beatty Town Advisory Board at its March 12 meeting. Lasorsa said neighbors have complained about the condition of empty mobile homes in the park and of wind-blown debris, including pieces of insulation. Board member Joni Jarvis, who lives near the park, said she had been contacted with similar complaints. Lasorsa said a letter has already been sent to the owner and that he may be cooperative in remedying the situation. If not, legal action will enable the county to clean up the property. Ray Williams, the new manager of the Beatty Water and Sanitation District, introduced himself at the meeting. Williams, who comes to Beatty from Austin, said he and his family like the community and the school, and that he plans to get involved in the community, including volunteering for the ambulance service. Williams said he is looking at making some efficiency improvements in the district's operation. He fielded some complaints from a couple in the audience who accused the district and its board of being against new businesses in the community. The board moved quickly through several agenda items, approving use of a room in the Community Center as a changing room for a Silver Tappers performance, making a minor change in its bylaws to conform with state law, and requesting the county have a record of survey done for the abandonment process on the new town square park. They also approved up to $2,500 for a large, motorized projection screen to be mounted behind the front curtain in the Community Center stage. They agreed to have town secretary Janet Rogers attend a planning conference in Las Vegas and accepted a $1,500 bid from Perchetti Roofing and Construction for roof repairs on the Community Center. Commissioner Joni Eastley said she is working on the transfer of the "underground church" property in Beatty from the county to the Beatty Historical Society. She also said that she would be attending a meeting between county staff and several solar energy companies to promote such industry in the area. |
