Tonopah in major boys golf tourney at Mountain Falls

Tonopah's boys, for the first time, will compete in the prestigious Pahrump Valley Invitational Golf Tournament Monday and Tuesday at Mountain Falls.

A total of 104 players will compete in the 36-hole medal play tournament, co-hosted by Pahrump Valley and Las Vegas Sierra Vista high schools. Co-tournament directors are Bob Hopkins of Pahrump Valley and Larry Goins of Sierra Vista.

The first tee time is at 11 a.m. Monday and at 7 a.m. Tuesday on the par 72, 6,647-yard championship course, located off Manse Road in south Pahrump.

Entered, along with the Trojans, Muckers and Lions, are:

Henderson Coronado (Sunrise Class 4-A);

Las Vegas Palo Verde (Sunset 4-A);

Las Vegas Faith Lutheran (3-A);

Henderson Green Valley (Sunrise 4-A);

Las Vegas Bonanza (Sunset 4-A);

Las Vegas Arbor View (Sunset 4-A);

Boulder City (3-A);

Henderson Foothill (Sunrise 4-A);

Las Vegas (Sunrise 4-A);

Las Vegas Spring Valley (Sunset 4-A);

Hesperia, Calif. (CIF Southern Section D-5);

Santa Ana, Calif., Mater Dei (Division II-CIF) and

Phoenix, Ariz., Northwest Christian (Class 2-A Central League).

Palo Verde, the invitational champion last spring, later claimed the Sunset Region title and finished fifth in the state. Chris Plappert, now at the University of Nevada-Reno, was the medalist, shooting 71-72--143 for Arbor View.

Coronado, Mater Dei, Sierra Vista, Pahrump Valley, Faith Lutheran and Bonanza will have two four-player teams in the tournament that ends Tuesday.

Many of the best boys in Las Vegas will compete, including Bradley Rowland, Arbor View; Yong Soo Shin, Bonanza; Jimmy Burns, Eric Glenn and Kevin Stratton, Coronado, and Cameron Alford, Foothill.

Other top-flight players include Green Valley's Damian Coughlin, Ryan Green and Michael Sadler; Ray Gillip of Las Vegas; Palo Verde's Cameron Bawden, Kyle Melchionne, Erik Newkirk and Chris Viravongsa and Spring Valley's Tyler Hunt.

Tonopah tee times Monday will be at 1:08 p.m., 1:15 p.m., 1:22 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. Mucker extras will tee off at 2:08 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.

In the 1:08 through 1:30 foursomes with the Muckers will be a Bonanza's Brown team member, along with Faith Lutheran Gold and Mater Dei Blue.

The Muckers' extra players will be in foursomes with Palo Verde's No. 9 and 10 players, Northwest Christian Nos. 5 and 6, and Green Valley's Nos. 5 and 6.

Tonopah finished fifth in a nine-team tournament played Monday at Tuesday at West Wendover. Making that trip for coach Robert Otteson's team were sophomore Denver Otteson (88), sophomore Chris Greber (101), sophomore Drew McLeod (100), junior Conrad Baker (100), freshman Alex Bridgman (129) and sophomore Chris McCaw (144).

Tonopah does not have a golf course in its area, so travels 80 miles (round trip) to Round Mountain to practice, said Robert Otteson. The Muckers also work out at a driving range in Tonopah. Helping Otteson this season are Rick Melton and Lawrence McLeod.

Pahrump Valley's starters are likely to include Cameron Belcher, Shane Lindemann, Elliott Owens, Daniel Shimakawa, William Peers and Anthony Franco. The Trojans played in a Southern Nevada Class 3-A League match at Boulder City Thursday.

Yuki Kato of Faith Lutheran and Brandon Faircloth of Boulder City will be among the leadingc 3-A players competing here.

NOTES -- Pahrump Valley tee times are (Gold) 11 a.m., 11:08 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 11:23 a.m.,(Maroon) 1:38 p.m., 1:45 p.m., 1:53 p.m. and 2 p.m. ... Trojan Gold oursomes will include players from Green Valley, Bonanza and Hesperia ... Maroon foursomes will have players from Coronado Red, Mater Dei and Sierra Vista ... After the first day, teams are divided into Gold, Maroon and Silver flights.
