The new stadium bleachers were opened Tuesday, as Pahrump Valley High School launched its 2008 track campaign against Las Vegas Class 4-A opponents Chaparral and Durango.

The two-month, $600,000 project -- which included installing 1,700 seats, handicap ramps, and a five-ton, 3,600 cubic foot press box -- was completed Monday and while some landscaping work remains, the stadium was ready for action.

So were the track teams, especially the homestanding Trojans, who were making their debut under new head coach, Andy Schneider.

"We did all right ... there are some things we have to work on, and we will be moving some people around," said Schneider. "We have plenty of time (before the Southern Nevada Class 3-A regionals in May.)"

Chaparral won both the boys and girls meets, with Pahrump Valley second and Durango third. In the boys scoring, Chaparral had 100 points, with PVHS at 52 and Durango 32. Chaparral's girls had 86, with the Trojans at 64 and Trailblazers 36. In 2009, incidentally, Pahrump Valley and Durango will be in the Class 4-A Sunset Region Southwest Division.

In boys action, the Trojans swept the pole vault, with Eric Chapman clearing 11 feet, 6 inches. Elias Armendariz was at 10-6 and James Chapman at 10-0. James Chapman missed the 2007 season because of illness, after being a near 13-foot vaulter in 2006.

Kyle Mills did not qualify in his specialty, the triple jump, but he won the long jump at 20-3 and was third in the high jump at 5-10.

Other scoring for PVHS;

Sergio Castro, second, 400, 0:52.6;

Dajan Celius, fourth, 400, 0:58.5;

PVHS, second, 4x400, 3:42.0; second, 4x100, 0:50.6; third, 4x800, 9:56.

For the girls, McKenzie Dean won the 800 (2:30), 1600 (5:46) and 3200 (12:34).

Bethani Jackson, third, pole vault, 6-6;

Pahrump Valley, third, 4x800, 12:13; second, 4x200, 1:56.71; second, 4x400, 5:17; 4x100, second, 0:55.42.

Ashley Lindgren, first, 200, 0:26.74; third, 100, 0:13.35.

Pahrump Valley will compete in the Louise Heitkotter Invitational at Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.

"We'll take 50 kids (26 boys, 24 girls) to Faith Saturday; we can enter three in each event," said Schneider, who plans on moving people around in the relays and will be looking for depth in all events.

Pahrump Valley's girls are the defending state 3-A champions, while the boys gave Dayton's talent-rich Dust Devils a run for the money in the 2007 state meet, contested at Del Sol High School in east Las Vegas.
