Death Valley offers fire open house

FURNACE CREEK, Calif. -- Death Valley National Park Fire Management Officer, Don Washington announced today that the park would host its third annual public open house Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center Auditorium.

The Visitor Center is located in the heart of the park in Furnace Creek along Highway 190.

This is free to the public.

Come and learn about hazard fuel reduction, fire mitigation, defensible space and information to help you protect your home from wildland fire.

A wildland fire crew with a wildland fire engine, fire equipment and personal protective equipment will be on hand to discuss their initial attack to wildland fires and answer questions about wildland fire and fire protection.

There will also be opportunities to learn about Death Valley National Park's soon-to-be-released-for-public-comment fire management plan as well as law enforcement and emergency medical services in the park.

This year's weather has produced a fairly significant wildflower display around the Furnace Creek area.

This may increase fuel loads and fuel continuity, thus increasing the size and duration of summer fires. Now is the time to start thinking about how to protect your home and family from wildland fire.

For information, join us at our open house or visit www.firewise.org.
