NCSO to sport new patrol cars

By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT

Dodge Chargers like this, minus the woodsy landscape, will soon comprise the entire fleet of the Nye County Sheriff's Office.

The Nye County Sheriff's Office will soon have a new look with the introduction of its new police package Dodge Cruisers.

The first of the new fleet of vehicles hit the streets Tuesday, March 11, and will soon be in service countywide, replacing the Ford Crown Victoria models that were previously used.

The Dodge Cruisers sport a new look for patrol cars, featuring a white body color with new decaling and the agency's name on a blue background with gold trim.

The large "Sheriff," written in white, reflective lettering will ensure you know what agency has come to your assistance or is pulling you over.

The new color scheme marks a drastic change from the sheriff's old vehicles, which had a brown background and the agency's name in multi-brown lettering.

But the colors aren't the only thing that will make the patrolling deputies more visible; the new cruisers also feature a new low-amp LED emergency light system, reportedly easier to see than the "Crown Vic's" vector light systems.

In addition to the snazzy new look, the new cars will also feature a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine which features a multi-displacement system.

That means the car alternates between four-cylinder mode and V-8 mode depending on the amount of power required.

Or, put more simply, it will go from 0 to 60 mph in six seconds, all while increasing fuel efficiency by 20 percent.

Fuel efficiency and performance were only some of the factors the sheriff's office used in deciding on a new vehicle.

The Charger received high rankings in surveys filled out by the deputies, an important consideration given that their patrol units become their office for up to 12 hours at a stretch.
