JROTC cadets pass annual formal inspection
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Pahrump Valley High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, or JROTC, cadets had their annual formal inspection Tuesday, March 11. The high school cadets were inspected by active duty U.S. Army officers, including soldiers from Headquarters, 14th Brigade, at the Presidio, Monterey, Calif., a professor of military science at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and soldiers from the Nevada National Guard. They were inspected on the wear and care of their uniforms, cadet knowledge, and were expected to be able to answer questions about government officials at all levels. "The cadets received very positive comments," Superintendent Rob Roberts said. "Their military bearing and drill performance were excellent and Nye County can be very proud of its ROTC cadets." The day prior to the inspection, Roberts, who served as a "Screaming Eagle" chopper pilot for the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam, donned his own military uniform for the first time in six years to help Command Sgt. Maj. Kenneth Sargent and Capt. Daniel Hernandez, ROTC instructors, prepare the five companies. The high school's JROTC program began four years ago and today's seniors, who have been in the program since it began, are called "plank holders." The inspection lasted for more than half a day, beginning with briefings for the cadets at 8 a.m. It was divided into two major portions, one taking place within the JROTC classrooms and another in the gym where various drills were conducted. |
