Las Vegas Faith Lutheran's fast-pitch softball team won five of six games, as 2008 spring sports got underway for Southern Nevada Class 3-A League schools.

The Lady Crusaders, sparked by the hitting, pitching and defense of Jessie Tracy, were 5-0 in a tournament at Bullhead City, Ariz., last weekend, but Monday, in a game against Class 4-A Reno Bishop Manogue, Faith fell 7-6 as a late-inning, three-run rally fell short.

At Bullhead City, Faith Lutheran defeated Yuma, Ariz., 3-2; Ely White Pine, 9-2; Las Vegas Calvary Chapel, 19-0; Spring Creek, 15-3 and Las Vegas Legacy 5-0.

Mesquite Virgin Valley was 4-2 in the 11th annual Lady Cougar Classic at Laughlin Friday and Saturday.

The Bulldogs finished second in the tournament, bowing 7-5 to Williams, Ariz., in the championship game.

Previously, Virgin Valley defeated West Wendover, 7-5; edged Lake Mead Christian Academy, 13-12; lost 11-10 to Wells; trounced Laughlin, 20-2 and defeated Eureka, 7-2.

Virgin Valley hosts the Desert Winds tournament Thursday through Saturday.

In other action involving Southern Nevada Class 3-A League teams:

Moapa Valley defeated Las Vegas Western 11-1 in baseball Friday, collecting 11 hits, including a triple by Bobby Vallet ... the Pirates outslugged Las Vegas Valley 17-14 Saturday, rallying from a 13-9 deficit in the first game of a doubleheader ... in the nightcap, the Pirates prevailed 9-6.

In baseball, Boulder City lost 4-3 to Class 4-A Henderson Foothill, Saturday.

Defending Nevada 1-A baseball champion Las Vegas Calvary Chapel overcame three errors to down 3-A titleholder Faith Lutheran 7-3, Friday.

Boulder City lost 13-2 to Legacy in softball, with the Eagles getting outhit 16-2 in the game stopped after four innings by the 10-run mercy rule.

Moapa Valley lost 9-1 to Las Vegas Arbor View in softball, with the Aggies outhitting the Pirates 13-2, Saturday.

In baseball Thursday, it will be Beatty at Virgin Valley ... Friday, Faith Lutheran plays at Las Vegas Bishop Gorman and Boulder City hosts Parowan, Utah ... Saturday, Faith Lutheran is at Las Vegas Trinity and Pahrump Valley is at Las Vegas Canyon Springs for a doubleheader.

In softball, Pahrump Valley is at St. George for a tournament this weekend, while Faith Lutheran is at home against San Diego Madison Monday.

NOTES -- Kirk Brotherson, who guided Virgin Valley to 12 Nevada boys high school basketball championships in the 1980s and 1990s, will not return in the 2008-2009 season .... According to a published report, Brotherson "chose not to resign ... he was replaced." ... Brotherson coached for several years at Altamont, Utah, before returning to the Mesquite school two years ago ... Virgin Valley lost 46-30 to Nevada 3-A champion Las Vegas Faith Lutheran in the regional semifinals last month.
