Trojans to host major golf invitational

Medalist Cameron Belcher had 74 and freshman Elliott Owens shot 83 in his varsity debut, as the Pahrump Valley High School golf team finished second in a Southern Nevada Class 3-A League match Thursday at Mountain Falls.

The Trojans had 427 to finish second to the 420 recorded by Las Vegas Faith Lutheran on the par 72, 6,647-yard course. Mesquite Virgin Valley had 462, Overton Moapa Valley 473 and Boulder City 482.

Pahrump Valley travels to Boulder City for another league match Thursday. Monday and Tuesday, the Trojans and Sierra Vista co-host the Pahrump Valley Invitational at Mountain Falls.

Other scores for coach Bob Hopkins' team were Will Peers, 97; Anthony Franco, 95; Shane Lindemann, 85, and Daniel Shimakawa, 90. Belcher is in his fourth season with the Trojans, while Owens has regularly competed in Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association and Farmers Cup series tournaments for several years.

For Faith Lutheran, Yuki Kato had 76, Blake Hampton, 84; Mike Mayer, 84; Braden Bennett, 89; Taylor Plant, 100 and Alex Vanee, 87.

For Virgin Valley, Jordan Smith had 85; Jacob Chambers, 99; Joshua Chambers, 86; Anthony Lucaro, 103; Justin Cascaden, 89 and Doug Hafen, 112.

Moapa Valley's scores were Jon Oglesby, 91; Jonathan Wilson, 94; Taylor Stevens, 94; Andrew Andersen, 102; Casey Lewis, 104 and Travis Causey, 92.

Brandon Faircloth's 88 paced Boulder City, with Ryan Roundtree at 91, Nick Stevens 104, Jeremy Dunbar 102, Joe Nunley 97 and Jacob Lynell 119.

NOTES -- Faith Lutheran has 10 points, with Pahrump Valley at nine, Virgin Valley eight, Moapa Valley seven and Boulder City six in the Southern 3-A team standings. ... Cameron Belcher leads the player of the year standings with 12 points ... Yuko Kato has 11 and Elliott Owens 10 ... A total of 104 players will compete in the Pahrump Valley Invitational, with the first tee time at 11 a.m. Monday ... Entered are teams from Henderson Coronado, Las Vegas Palo Verde, Faith Lutheran, Green Valley, Bonanza, Arbor View, Boulder City, Foothill, Las Vegas, Spring Valley and Tonopah, as well as Hesperia (Calif.) and Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei ... Coronado, Mater Dei, Sierra Vista, Pahrump Valley, Faith Lutheran and Bonanza will have two four-player teams in the tournament that ends Tuesday. ... The Pahrump Valley Golf Founders Association's Quarter Auction, the major fund-raiser for the junior golf program, is Saturday night at the Nugget Convention Center.
