Two Mexican restaurants, located less than a block from each other on East Calvada Boulevard, were simultaneously targeted by arsonists early Saturday morning.

Sheriff's deputies were first dispatched to the Su Mesa restaurant, located at 1560 E. Calvada, at approximately 4:20 a.m., for a report of the business being on fire.

Upon arriving, deputies saw the front windows broken with flames visible inside.

Outside the scene, deputies discovered a beer bottle with a flaming rag protruding from the open end, a device more commonly known as a Molotov cocktail.

A second Molotov cocktail was located inside the restaurant at the origin of the fire, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies were able to preserve evidence and contain the fire until Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue Service arrived and took command.

While at that scene, a witness noticed white smoke coming from the rooftop of El Leon De Oro Restaurant located just down the road at 1720 E. Calvada Blvd.

Fire Chief Scott Lewis said he reassigned the firefighters at Su Mesa to the new scene where a fire was burning in the seating area of the restaurant inside but was quickly controlled and extinguished.

The sheriff's office said a device, also indicating an arson attempt, was located inside.

Further investigation revealed that a raised white sport utility vehicle was seen "rapidly leaving the area" prior to the Su Mesa fire being reported.

Both fires are being investigated by the state fire marshal and the sheriff's office.

Anyone with information pertaining to either arson attempt is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 775-751-7000.
