Some of the cowboys and cowgirls rodeo fans will watch compete in McCullough Arena today, Saturday and Sunday have basic goals.

Go around as well as they can to accumulate Nevada High School Rodeo Association points so that they can qualify for a series of major post-season events:

The state finals rodeo at Winnemucca June 18-22,

The Silver State Rodeo at a site and on dates to be announced;

The National Wrangler Junior Rodeo June 29-July 5 at Gallup, N.M., and

The National High School Finals Rodeo at Farmington, N.M., July 20-26.

Pahrump Valley is the host high school for the three-day rodeo that begins at noon today, 9 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday at McCullough Arena, down the street from the Ruud Community Center at Basin and Highway 160.

More than 150 boys and girls from high schools all over Nevada are expected to compete.

Wrangler events for girls today are barrels, goats, breakaway, poles, ribbon roping and team roping. The boys' competition will be in bull riding, goats, breakaway, calf tying, ribbon roping, team roping and chute doggin'.

High school rodeo events Saturday and Sunday are bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, goat tying, barrel racing, pole bending and bull riding.

Cheryl Tibbits of the PVHS club is handling the arrangements for the rodeo; for information, call 764-7744.

A mandatory contestants meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. It is the sixth rodeo of the season for the NHSRA.
