PVHS hoops coaches have camps on the summer slate
By DON McDERMOTT
The Pahrump Valley High School boys' basketball team is at Dixie State College in St. George, Utah, this week, participating in its second camp of the off-season. Coach Lonnie Shereck's team was at Flagstaff, Ariz., last week, taking part in a three-day camp at Northern Arizona University. Eight players, including two seniors, made the trip. "We took Mike Amburgey and Marvin Weekly ... Tyler True was unable to make the trip," said Shereck. "Alex Anderson, Anthony Franco, Shane Lindemann, Jared Holley, Daniel Shimakawa and Josh Schultz all went to Arizona," said Shereck, who is preparing the Trojans for their first season Class 4-A. Pahrump Valley will be in the Sunset Region Southwest Division, with Las Vegas teams Bishop Gorman, Spring Valley, Durango, Bonanza, Western, Sierra Vista, Clark and Desert Oasis (a new school). "We were able to play six games in three days at Flagstaff, winning three. We will have 20 boys going to St. George, including some freshmen," said Shereck. "This is the fifth summer we've gone to a camp, but this will be the fewest number we have taken (to St. George)," said Shereck. "Usually, we'll have 30 kids going. We will have four or five (Rosemary Clarke) middle school boys going." "All the the boys we have involved this summer are hardworking and self-motivating," said Shereck. "They went out and raised the money -- about $265 each -- to go to St. George." According to the boys' basketball schedule released May 29, Pahrump Valley will open the season at Henderson Coronado in a non-league game Dec. 11. On Dec. 12-13, the Trojans host the Pahrump Valley Times Cage Classic, with Class 4-A Las Vegas Silverado, 2-A Lincoln County and Fremont, Calif., American entered. The next 16 are Southwest Division games. After the Trojans play at Clark Dec. 15 and at Durango Dec. 17, they are at home against Bishop Gorman, the 2007-2008 Southwest champion, Jan. 6. On Jan. 8, Pahrump Valley hosts Sierra Vista. The regular season ends Feb. 13; on the 17th, the Sunset-Sunrise Regionals begin, with the top four teams in each of Las Vegas's four divisions qualifying. The regionals run through Feb. 21. The Nevada Class 4-A State tournament will be played at a southern site Feb. 26-27-28. *The unofficial Pahrump Valley High School girls' basketball schedule has the Trojans playing in tournaments at River Valley, Ariz., and in Las Vegas in December. The PVTimes Trojans Cage Classic is Dec. 12-13; pairings and times will be announced. Jason Odegard, who was an assistant to Bob Hopkins for several seasons, including the Lady Trojans' state 3-A championships seasons of 2004 and 2005, will be the head coach. *Jason Odegard will have a basketball camp for boys and girls 6 to 14 years old July 9-10-11 in Pahrump Valley High School. It's a Pistol Pat USA camp, with Patrick Williams, one of the nation's top shooting clinicians, working at the camp. Hours for the camp are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the fee $85 per person. Campers will receive a T-shirt, an evaluation of his or her shot, certificates, awards and Pistol Pete Maravich memorabilia. Williams is a former Indiana college basketball coach whose Pistol Pat Corporation has directed and given motivational talks to more than 50,000 young people. These programs have also helped other organizations, including Focus on the Family, DARE, Shot Doctor and many European basketball federations. All of the Pistol Pat camps are dedicated to the late Pistol Pete Maravich, a former collegiate and National Basketball Association standout.
