Junior golf The Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association summer tournament schedule continues Monday, starting at 3 p.m. on the Lakeview Executive course. Other tournaments will be July 7 and July 14, with the Gene Goins Memorial to close the summer campaign July 26-27. The 2008-2009 schedule begins Sept. 8, with subsequent tournaments Oct. 4, Nov. 1, Dec. 6, Jan. 10, Feb. 7, March 7, April 4 and May 2. The 2009 clinic will be June 15-16-17. Summer hoops The Nye County Sports Association returns with summer basketball for youngsters 7-18. The camps will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Saturday through Aug. 1 in the Ninth Grade Academy gym. Registration fee is $30; forms will be distributed at all Pahrump Valley schools, or contact Courtney Lewis at 1-702-237-5124 or 727-7651. Write NCSA at P.O. Box 3460, 89041. From the NIAA The 3-A and 2-A Girls Golf tournaments will be divided, with each high school classification to conduct its own post-season event, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association ruled at its June meeting last week in Reno. The NIAA believes there are enough schools in each classification to split the tournament. Wells won 2-A titles in 2003 and 2004, but moved into the 3-A tournament in 2005, bowing to Pahrump Valley at Boulder Creek. Wells, a 1-A school for all other sports, was fourth in the 2006 state tournament, again won by Pahrump Valley, which will be in Class 4-A this fall. Las Vegas Calvary Chapel will play in Class 2-A in the 2008-2009 school year, moving up from 1-A. Pool standings Tuesday 9-Ball League -- Town Hall No. 1 8-0, Eve-N-Keel 6-2, Rusty's 6-2, Arnie's 4-4, Town Hall No. 2 4-4, Eagles Nest 2-6, Our Bar 2-6. Top shooters -- Roger Long 16-4, Boyd Groesbeck 15-5, Mike Scott 14-6, Bobby Desmaris 13-7, Karen Riggers 13-7, Jeff Jesionowski 13-7, Sherry Dalton 13-7. At Petrack Park Volleyball in the Park will be conducted each Sunday, starting at 6 p.m. at Petrack Park. A grass court net will be set up for all who wish to play. At RCMS A junior volleyball camp for students grades 6-8 next school year will be held Aug. 25-28 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Rosemary Clarke Middle School gym. Tryouts for the 2008 Lady Sharks team will be Sept. 2-4, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the gym. Another camp for seventh and eighth graders may be held this month. Call 727-7737 for information. Pop Warner Pop Warner football registration forms for players 5 to 12 years old can be picked up, then completed, at Worden's Farmers Insurance, 2210 E. Commercial Road, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The cost is $180; applicants must bring a copy of their child's birth certificate to register. Practice starts Aug. 1, with eight games to be played. AYSO One registration date remains for AYSO soccer players. Players born between Aug. 1, 1989, and July 31, 2004, are eligible to register. A copy of the child's birth certificate should be brought to the registration center. The remaining date is: * July 12, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The community center will be the site for registration on that date, according to information provided by the soccer organization. The cost will be $85 for the first child, $80 for each additional child within the same family. Pre-registration can be made on the Web site, www.eayso.org. All players in divisions U8 to U14 on either June 7 or July 12 will be evaluated at the community center. Players should bring shin guards to the evaluations. Track notes The Pahrump Special Olympics track and field team won eight gold medals in the Nevada Games last week in Reno. In all, the team earned four silver and two bronze medals. Competing were Chip Danielson, Sterling Freeman, Ashlin Johnson, Anthony Lopez, Steven Markwell, Felecia Royster and Larry Yates. The coaches are Kay Jones and David Markwell. Bowling will start Aug. 25 at the Nugget. Bocce is ongoing Saturday mornings. |
