Worship through the arts

The Faith Fellowship is hosting the first annual Worship Through the Arts program 6-8 p.m. every Monday beginning June 30 in the main sanctuary, 921 S. Highway 160, Suite 401.

The classes will last for nine weeks and are designed to teach different types of art.

There will be four different classes for each session which include guitar, sign language, puppets and painting.

No child care will be provided and children under age 10 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

P.O.S.S. Schedule

The Pahrump Open Schooling Show dates are:

June 28, 6 p.m.; Sept. 13, 6 p.m. and Oct. 25, 9 a.m.

Shows are held Saturdays at McCullough Arena.

Awards will go to first place, ribbons will go to first through fifth.

High point for the day will be awarded and youth high point at year-end. PAC and OCAP approved.

Progressive Choices yard sale

Progressive Choices Workshop will have a yard sale 8:30-3:30 June 26-27 at the workshop, 4760 Pahrump Valley Blvd., Suites 9 and 10. The workshop is located between Gamebird Road and Manse Street.

Progressive Choices is for the developmentally and mentally challenged and all proceeds will go to an account for a new transport van.

Democratic central committee

The Democratic central committee will meet at 7 p.m. June 30 in the Bob Ruud Community Center Room B.

Retired/senior program

The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help.

This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such as shopping, medical appointments, etc.

RSVP reimburses volunteers 24 cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers.

Additionally, volunteers receive training, annual seminar education and appreciation award dinners.

Teen night

The Nye Communities Coalition and St. Martin's in the Desert Episcopal Church will host a teen night 5-8 p.m. July 3 at the Pahrump Town Pool.

Middle school through high school aged students are invited to participate in an evening of free swimming, food and fun.

ARES fundraiser

The Amateur Radio Emergency Services is holding a fundraiser by selling raffle tickets for several nice prizes, the top prize being $100 worth of groceries from Smith's.

Winners will be announced at the annual field day 2 p.m., June 28 in the Pahrump Nugget parking lot.

Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5, and may be purchased in front of Smith's or Wal-Mart until June 27.

The Pahrump Valley High School class of '88 plans to celebrate a 20-year reunion 7 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Flamingo in Las Vegas.

Shoes and socks donations

For the Love of Kids and Bikes is taking shoes and socks donations at the Short Branch Saloon in Crystal.

The donation of a pair of shoes will get the donor a steak dinner and a pair of socks will get the donor a meatloaf dinner.

The drive ends Aug. 17.

The Short Branch opens at 10 a.m. and is closed on Wednesday and Thursday.

Occupational illness seminar

If you or someone you know, have or have had an illness that may have resulted from exposure to radiation, beryllium, silica or other toxic substances in the course of work for NTS, Tonopah Test Range, Yucca Mountain or another department of the Department of Energy, you may be eligible for federal compensation and related medical expenses.

Representatives from the Department of Labor Energy Employees Compensation Resource Center will be in Pahrump 11-1 p.m. June 26 at the Pahrump Senior Center to discuss recent changes to the program.

Qualified survivors of deceased workers who died from those illnesses may be eligible for compensation.

Donations for Quilts for Cancer

Quilts for Cancer volunteers have worked all year to make Christmas stockings for homebound seniors in Pahrump. Two hundred plus stockings need to be filled with nutritious snacks.

Volunteers are also working to have a hand-made gift to accompany the stocking which will be distributed in December.

A $10 donation will fill one stocking and donations can be sent to: P.O. Box 4702, Pahrump, NV 89041.

The volunteers will have some of the finished items for public exhibit 10-2 p.m. July 26 at Seemoore's Too, on Highway 160.

The Salvation Army will have a summer reading program for struggling and/or reluctant readers for kindergarten through middle school students 1-2:30 p.m. July 23, 24, 25 at the Salvation Army, 721 S. Buol Road.

Team forming for Relay for Life

The High Desert Linedancers are sponsoring a team for the Relay for Life in August.

The event takes place 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Aug. 16, at Petrack Park.

There will be food, entertainment and camaraderie as participants walk to honor cancer survivors and pay tribute to loved ones who lost the cancer battle.

Host families needed

NWS Peace program is seeking families to host students from Ecuador, Turkey, Brazil, Vietnam, Belgium Finland and various other countries for the 2008 school year.

The students are 15-18 years old and will begin arriving in August to spend five to 10 months with a family while attending the local high school.

Students are pre-screened and speak English. They are looking forward to learning about our culture and teaching us about theirs.

They have medical insurance and spending money for clothes, school supplies and entertainment.

Host families are not compensated but may claim a $50 per month charitable contribution on their income tax.

Students require a bed, meals and a caring family.

Early placement is crucial to the success of the program and the goal is to have students matched with families by July 1.

ARRL Field Day

The Amateur Radio Emergency Services will hold an annual Field Day June 28-29 in the parking lot of the Pahrump Nugget.

VFW update

Remember, there is a swap meet the second Sunday of every month 7-3 p.m. in the VFW parking lot. Space rental is $7 if you bring your own table and $10 if you rent a table from the VFW. Call Hilda, 727-6072 for reservations and more information.

There is karaoke 3 p.m. until whenever on Saturdays.

Gourmet dinners are available at the post every Friday starting at 6 p.m. A donation is requested.

The VFW State Department convention will be June 25-28 at both the VFW Post 10054 and at the Nugget. There will be no dinner on that Friday.

Computer users meet

The Pahrump Computer Users group will meet at 1 p.m. July 7 in the large meeting room at the Pahrump Community Library.

The program this month will be presented by Mike but no presentation topic is available at this time.

Beatty summer reading program

The Beatty Library summer reading program will begin at 2 p.m. July 2 with sign up.

Classes will be 2 p.m., Wednesdays until July 30

The theme this year is "Catch the Reading Bug" and is open to children between the ages of 5 and 10.

The program will end with a party on the final day.

4-H dancing

The 4-H is looking for youth 5-19 who want to learn clogging and square dancing.

The food pantry at No to Abuse is empty.

Frazier Furniture is holding a food drive offering up to 10 percent discounts on any stock purchase.

For each item donated, you will receive a 1 percent discount up to a maximum of 10 percent.

Shakespeare made simple

The Pahrump Community Library and the Tumbleweed Tales Society are sponsoring two workshops for Shakespeare fans.

"Shakespeare Readers Theater" will be 4:30-6 p.m. every Tuesday at the library, where the group reads and discusses Shakespeare's work.

"Shakespeare Made Simple" is 10 a.m.-noon every third Saturday of the month.

Sessions are free and are offered to help everyone unlock Shakespeare's language.

Special guest storyteller Jim Cogan, will present "Reading Bug Stories," 10 a.m. June 24.

Quilts 4 Cancer meets

The Quilts 4 Cancer volunteers will meet for a "Christmas in July" at 10 a.m. July 26.

Volunteers will gather to make homemade stockings for Christmas and will need help filling them. The goal is 250 stockings. With each filled stocking a gift will be given.

There will be no host food and beverages. Please show group discount for the meeting room.

Finished items will be given to the Senior Center for Meals on Wheels recipients, Nathan Adelson Hospice, Evergreen Nursing Home and the VFW for home-bound veterans.
