Man busted after chase
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Donald Wayne Sikes, 33, was arrested and booked on numerous charges after allegedly leading Nye County Sheriff's deputies on a dangerous high-speed chase through Pahrump Tuesday afternoon. It began when Dep. Erickson took a report for a stolen vehicle at around 2 p.m. About half an hour later, he was informed that Bureau of Land Management Ranger Burger was attempting to stop the stolen vehicle, a white van. While Erickson was on his way to Burger's location, he saw the BLM ranger chasing the van out of the desert near the end of Homestead Road. The van passed Erickson's patrol vehicle, at which point he was able to see the license plate and confirm the van was in fact the stolen vehicle. Burger and Erickson both chased the van to Homestead Road and Bond Street, traveling north. The driver of the van allegedly attempted to elude the officers by driving off the pavement onto both the east and the west sides of Homestead Road, traveling at approximate speeds of 80 to 100 mph, according to the sheriff's office. While trying to evade, the driver of the swiped van ran two stop signs and allegedly attempted to run other vehicles off the roadway. In addition, the sheriff's office said the driver attempted to strike three marked patrol vehicles and run over six to eight pedestrians before stopping and finally attempting to make a break for it on foot. Sikes allegedly ran into the Winery convenience store where he was apprehended without further incident. He was booked on charges of grand larceny auto, assault with a deadly weapon (nine counts, the deadly weapon being the van), evading a police officer, reckless driving, and no driver's license in possession. His bail was set at $38,092. |
