FOR SERIES Research includes need for photos
By DON McDERMOTT
The Pahrump Valley Times plans a historical perspective on Nye County sports in general, Pahrump Valley High School in particular, starting in July. Needed are photographs of all sports from 1973, when athletics first began at Pahrump Valley High School, through 1991. Photographs can be color or black and white. Bring them into the Times office to be scanned and copied for use in those July editions. The photos will be returned to you if self-addressed envelopes are provided. Sources can include yearbooks, photo albums and negatives. Photos on other sports -- auto racing, rodeo, golf et al. -- can also be contributed. Photos depicting playing fields no longer in use and other sites where sports flourished can be brought in to the Times. At the same time, PV Times readers familiar with the early years -- 1973 through 1991 in particular -- are asked to write in letters, giving their perspective on what happened in Nye athletics during those years. Readers who know what happened to those athletes -- what are they doing now? -- can also contribute that valuable information. Such information can be e-mailed to Don McDermott, sports editor, at donmacd@excite.com. Part of the research was provided by Rod Poteete, a former varsity baseball coach at PVHS, was the school's premiere sports historian in the years 1973 through 1986. A member of the PVHS Athletics Hall of Fame, Poteete was not only a coach but a sports reporter for the Times in those early years. His baseball teams won 153 and lost 82 -- 80-34 in league games -- in 12 seasons. Football started in 1973, with Poteete, a former pitcher at Stanford University and in the Los Angeles Dodgers system, starting baseball in 1974. In seven of nine seasons, PVHS had the Most Valuable Player in the league -- third baseman Carl Kaucky in 1978, pitcher Pete Sevilla in 1979, catcher Gary Nerger in 1981, pitcher Dick Empey in 1983 and 1984 and pitcher Charles Stevens in 1985 and 1986. Nerger caught every inning in every game in four years for the Trojans. Pahrump Valley played in Class A from 1975 through 1981, in 2-A from 1982 through 1985 and in 1-A again in 1986 -- the year Poteete retired as a coach -- and 1987, when Andy Anderson was chosen to head the baseball program. The Trojans won five league championships and finished second in the state three times (1979, 1981 and 1983). His teams could hit -- averaging .338 in 12 seasons -- and pitch, with a collective earned run average of 2.69 in 235 games.
