AMARGOSA -- The weather was graciously obliging for Amargosa Days this year, and the Amargosa Community Park was filled with volunteers and participants taking full advantage of both Friday and Saturday, June 6-7.

Friday kicked off the event with a Chili Cook-Off.

The boys from Horizon Academy took home the People's Choice Award, the Amargosa Senior Center took first place, Abby Brown won second place, and Cynthia Pahnka was awarded third place.

The event literally got a running start bright and early when competitors in the 2K and 5K began their walk/run at 7 a.m.

Greg Sullivan completed the 5K race in an impressive 15 minutes, garnering him first place.

Joe Dotson won second place and Brian C. from Horizon Academy [the name was listed as Brian C. in the release] took third place.

In the 2K race, John Zamora won first place, Wyatt Henry earned second place, and Bonnie Lynn and Andrea Henry tied for third place.

Throughout the day various community groups were on hand to offer food, beverages and fun.

Kathy Myers, manning the Veterans of Foreign Wars beer booth, was happy with the turnout.

"The VFW has done very well in the past day and a half," Myers said. "We've had a lot of support from both members and non-members."

Meanwhile, Sue Steele, community volunteer, presided over a table piled high with raffle gifts.

Baked goods were sold to help the Amargosa Senior Center.

Griselda Bracamondes was on hand serving raspados, or corn on the cob covered in mayonnaise and cheese.

The games went on all day long and included a horseshoe tournament which proved that close can be good enough. Joe Dodson and Jesus Moreno, a.k.a. "Team Ringer" won first place in the tournament. Second place was taken by Saul and Brandon Villanueva and Randy Kadrmas and Aaron Lynn took third place.

And, while waiting for the barbecue at 5 o'clock plenty of people were enjoying a casual game of baseball.

Proceeds from hamburger, hot dog, and soda sales at the concession stand went to support future Amargosa events and completed a perfect and enjoyable day at the park.
