Off-season? Not for PVHS athletes
By DON McDERMOTT
Fall sports at Pahrump Valley High School will be football, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross country, girls golf and volleyball. To be eligible to participate in preseason workouts, as well as in regular-season action, athletes must be registered, as well as having a physical examination and health insurance coverage. Proper forms must be picked up at the school before going to a doctor; these forms will not be available until July 1. Physicians, not chiropractors, must conduct the medical examination. That's the word from the PVHS athletics department. Every student-athlete must have a new physical examination every year, according to Nye County School District regulations, which means Beatty, Round Mountain, Tonopah and Gabbs have to follow that particular requirement. If a student-athlete does not have health insurance coverage, he or she can purchase it through the school. Dates to remember: * July 1: Physical and registration forms, which must eventually be on file with the school district's athletics department, will be available at PVHS. Summer hours will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday; the AD's telephone number is 727-7908. * Aug. 4: Early registration will be from noon to 8 p.m. in the PVHS athletics department office. Bring completed physical and registration forms. * Aug. 11: Final registration will be from noon to 6 p.m. in the PVHS athletics department office. All student-athletes must be registered by this date to be eligible for preseason workouts. The first day of football practice is Aug. 14, with Leo Verzille the coach. All other sports start Aug. 18, with Jill Harris directing volleyball, Gene Smith coaching boys soccer, Greg Leseberg in charge of girls soccer, Andy Anderson coaching cross country and Julie Floyd directing girls golf. In other sports-related news: * Dale Norton will represent Pahrump Valley High School at the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association meeting June 18-19 at Reno. On the agenda is a discussion item concerning girls soccer at PVHS. At the moment, the Lady Trojans are scheduled to play in the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League this fall, then move into Class 4-A in the 2009-2010 school year. On the agenda is an action item dealing with winter soccer in the Clark County School District. A Green Valley High School student's parent said he would file suit if soccer in the CCSD was played in the fall, since his daughter is also a volleyball player and would be denied that opportunity. Which means a Title IX violation could be an issue. Also to be discussed is the possibility of having a 16-person bracket at the state Class 4-A tournament. Another action item is a request by Las Vegas Faith Lutheran to move from Class 3-A to 4-A in the 2009-2010 school year. Mineral County Hawthorne's alignment will also be discussed. Las Vegas Calvary Chapel wants to move its baseball program into Class 4-A. The 2008 team won the state 1-A title this spring. |
