VFW could host recycling

To Pahrump Valley Disposal:

The VFW located on Homestead Road, would be an ideal location for a recycling bin for the southern section of Pahrump.

We have two "in and out" driveways and most people are aware of our location. This includes Artesia, Mountain Falls, Concordia, Beazer Homes, all the way south to the Chicken Ranch -- a large percentage of Pahrump's population.

Yes, we are aware of the bins located at Wal-Mart and at your location but how often do we get to your area, especially due to the high fuel costs.

And where are we going to store all this "stuff" until we do head to town? I'll wager we're talking volumes.

Give the people the access to recycle and a large majority will. Newspapers, for example, accumulate quickly, as well as plastics, aluminum and glass.

Please contact the VFW Commander Ed Morrisey at 727-6072 for any further discussion.

Put money where your mouth is

Just got back from two weeks in the Midwest. I've been thinking about the sign in front of Terrible's Town Casino about the movies that were to have opened in Pahrump and for financial reasons don't seem to be a sure thing.

About six years ago, in Addison, Ill., on West Lake Street, a theater known as Marcus 18 was built. The surrounding area was void of any businesses but they went ahead and opened, with all employees wearing tuxes, and the price of sodas and popcorn rivaling any of the movies in the casinos in Las Vegas.

To my great surprise, this theater has been surrounded by not only hotels, but by ZaZa's Italian steak house, Al's Italian sandwiches, Uncle Henry's ice cream parlor, Applebees, Famous Dave's Ribs, Giordonos, Culvers, La Hacienda, DeMarcos Italian restaurant, Ball Park Sports Bar, Golden Palace Chinese restaurant, Portillos Hot Dogs, Wok N' Fire Korean restaurant, and Home Run Inn Pizza.

To me, this just proves that the town does not have to rely on the casinos to be able to have a dinner and a show. To quote the movie, "If you build it, they will come."

I think that its about time for people, like EDEN and the commissioners that keep saying that we need industry in Pahrump, to start putting their money where their mouths are.

The above-mentioned restaurants are all within two blocks of the movie, and they also serve a group of condos that are going up in the area. With the price of gas going out of sight, its hard for the young families to dine out, let alone go into Las Vegas for entertainment.

Disappointed in grad night

I am writing you today to let you know how disappointed I am with the grad night after party held at the Community Center.

Pahrump Party Supply hosted the event for the seniors to have a safe place to attend after graduation instead of possibly getting into trouble or being injured. I commend them for offering that to the seniors.

They were also given the option to bring a guest (aka "date"). However, my son was not able to bring in his guest because his date was another male.

My son came to check in and when Lisa (coordinator) asked who he was, my son gave Lisa his name and she asked who was with him and he said his "guest."

She then asked him if this was his date. They (the boys) joked about it and put their arm around each other and said "yes."

She then informed them that no, the guest would have to wait and see if a senior single girl was coming in and then the friend could come in with her.

My son decided to wait in the parking lot with a few friends to see if anyone showed up that could get his guest in.

Well, two minutes later, while I was still in the parking lot not 10 feet away from the check-in area, waiting to see if my son made it in, two girls approached the check-in counter holding hands. They walked right in, no questions asked.

Two more girls walked up holding hands -- went right in. By now my son saw them all walk in and was rightfully getting upset that he and his male friend were not allowed in.

I walked up to the side of the check-in area and since Lisa was still checking in students, I decided to ask a chaperone there. He said it was Lisa's call on who can come in.

My son decided that he did not want to attend her safe party night and opted to "hang out" at the Pahrump Nugget.

When I returned to ask Lisa (she had no kids checking in by that time and I was not yelling at her, I was only asking a question) why my son was not able to attend with his choice of guest, she informed me that "friends" were not able to attend, it is a date party.

She then said that if my son had walked up to the check-in counter and said it was his date, they would have been let in. I told her that was incorrect, because they had joked with her about it being a date and she still said no.

I asked her why is it okay for girls to bring girls but not boys bring boys? She said the invitation says we "ask that you do not bring friends," but dates.

When you don't have a girlfriend or a boyfriend and you want to bring someone you want to be with, why is it wrong to bring the same sex? And why is it okay for a girl to bring a "girlfriend" but not a boy to bring a "boyfriend?"

My son's guest is his best friend and "brother," not just some kid wanting to crash a party.

And when did it become Lisa's call to say who can and cannot attend a senior graduation party that she invited them to?

My son decided not to attend this function by himself and unfortunately, he is going to remember his graduation night as the night someone decided to play judge and jury and not let him attend something he was looking forward to.

I know my son was not the only one that was unable to attend with a male guest.

I feel that Lisa and Pahrump Party Supply owe these boys an apology and some sort of restitution for her actions.

I totally agree on a safe night grad function, but don't turn away seniors -- bottom line.
