Class of 2008 to enter PV HOF
The Class of 2008-2009 has been selected for the Pahrump Valley High School Athletics Hall of Fame. It includes eight athletes, one administrator and one important organization. To be inducted Sept. 26 during ceremonies at the Pahrump Valley-Las Vegas Western Class 4-A Southwest Division football game will be: • An administrator, the late Ray DePalma; • The Pahrump Junior Golf Founders Club, which has helped the high school produce five state championship girls teams and some of the best boys teams in Nevada; • State wrestling champion Neil Cowley, who won his title in 2001 despite recuperating from a broken hand; • Basketball standout Melodie Sturgeon (Eleogram), who played on three girls' state championship basketball teams in the late 1970s and early 1980s; • Basketball strongman Jeff Caha; • Volleyball star Amy Ellenwood; • Multisports star Felicia Fahey; • Gary Nerger, a Spelling Bee champion as a youngster and a multi-sports standout in high school; • Carl Kaucky, who helped PVHS boys team excel in the early years the Trojans competed; • Kelly Costley (Buffi), another multi-sports star for the Lady Trojans. We know some of the facts about some of these athletes, but not all of the facts we need to know about all of these eight people. Feel free to e-mail us at donmacd@excite.com; provide photos if possible and let us know their whereabouts. The selection of the golf founders club was a no-brainer. That organization has helped fund all of the kids' golf programs in the Pahrump Valley, including the high school teams. The girls have won five state championships and this spring, every boy on the PVHS regional championship team was a product of the Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association, that runs at least 18 tournaments during the year, as well as conduct a mandatory clinic. DePalma was inducted into the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association in February 2007. He was a principall, assistant principal and athletic administrator at six different high schools, including PVHS, after his arrival in Nevada in 1984. He was a Nevada athletics director of the year and the former president of the Nevada Association of School Administrators (2000-2001). |
