11 endangered places

The 2008 list of the state's "11 most endangered historic places" includes the Nye County Courthouse in Tonopah, built in 1905 at an original cost of $55,000, according to Preserve Nevada.

The old courthouse has been abandoned since the new courthouse was built. After it quickly fell into disrepair, Nye County commissioners pledged nearly $200,000 to stabilize and replace the roof to arrest the decay.

The board feels the building is an excellent candidate for restoration and rehabilitation projects.

Also on the list is Rhyolite, outside Beatty, which represents historic mining in Nevada.

The town is historically significant because many of its buildings were constructed of stone and concrete, which was not a common practice at the time.

Most of the existing historic structures are deteriorating and in need of stabilization or rehabilitation. Preserve Nevada feels Rhyolite is in need of financial support from the BLM as well as a full-time, on-site caretaker to protect the town.
