Fire consumes under-construction home
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
A two-story single-family home under construction at Lemon Street and Highland Avenue was engulfed by flames Thursday at about 2 p.m. An hour later, although Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Service had effectively quashed the bulk of the fire, surrounding vehicles and brush were still flaming as fire-rescue workers endured superheated temperatures to keep the fire from spreading to surrounding properties and land. Assisted by the U.S. Fire Service and Bureau of Land Management firefighters, rescue workers were forced to combat a number of flammable liquid hazards in their attempt to extinguish flames reaching 70 to 80 feet high. "Every time we tried to douse something at the front of the vehicle, we were hampered by flammable liquid exploding and igniting," Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Chief Scott Lewis said. The surrounding property had plenty of fodder for the fire, including two boats and a number of vehicles, all of which ignited. Lewis was forced to move his command vehicle, which serves as the command center on scene, for the same reason. He was unable to identify what the flammable liquid was at the time. In spite of the huge flames, flammable liquids and dry surrounding area, there were no injuries, a fact Lewis attributed to the level of training of his staff and cooperation with other agencies. The fire was reported to dispatchers as having explosions at the outset, so Nye County Sheriff's Office deputies were sent to the scene as well. "The Nye County Sheriff's Office did an excellent job of assisting us early on, getting everyone in the area evacuated," Lewis said. The fire is expected to be investigated by both the Nye County Sheriff's Office and the Nevada state fire marshal. |
