Health fair for kids scheduled
By MARY BALDASANO
The Pahrump Valley Rotary Club and Nye Communities Coalition join forces to help county children receive health care and provide parents with information on how to obtain assistance. The Children's Health Fair will be held Aug. 2, from 9 to 3 p.m. at Wal-Mart. Dorothy Ryans, vice president, Nye Communities Coalition Southern Region, said, "The event is going to be wonderful. We've been trying to put such an event together for a long time, and with the help of the community we are able to do it. It will be beneficial to our Family-to-Family organization to get school supplies. Also, it will be very useful in bringing health issues to the forefront in Nye County." There will be both indoor and outdoor vendors and demonstrations. Only those who are newborn to age 18 are eligible to receive help at this event. Patricia Cox, president of Pahrump Rotary Club, said "The idea is to give parents a one-stop shopping on getting their children ready to go back to school. Our mission is to increase health care awareness and obtain much needed school supplies." Vendors such as Red Rock/Specialty Medical/Advance Medical will be providing school sports physicals. Women in Crisis will be giving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) demonstrations. Family-to-Family will be teaching car seat safety. Tina Simpson, director of Family-to-Family in Pahrump, said "We expect to have a great turnout and to be able to assist children get needed school supplies. Valley Electric's willingness to set up their bucket truck to collect things is great." Southern Nevada Immunization Center will be giving children's immunizations with a hoped-for donation, however, no one will be denied access. And the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, will be giving fluoride varnish dental care. Simpson went on to say, "This year is three times larger than last year and we are hoping to bring education on many available assistance areas to those who need it." Information will be provided on available mental health assistance through both Pahrump Mental Health and Advanced Behavioral Insight (Dr. Becky Grgich). Available day care areas will be addressed by Child's Play, Casper's Hideaway and Careosoul. For fun things, the library, Skate Zone, 4-H, Boys and Girls Club, American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), and Pahrump Little League will be available to get children excited about being part of the community. Cox also said that "if you visit each vendor you will be eligible to win a cash prize of $100, $50 or $25. Vendors must sign off on your 'passport' which is provided on arrival -- look for it." Rotary will also be initiating a school talent show, senior citizen dance, car washes, and more and the money will go back into the community. Cox added, "Kevin Pape (Wal-Mart manager) has been absolutely great in helping this event take form. Also, Valley Electric and the Nye County School District have been instrumental in the preparations." |
