Beatty ponders park perimeter

BEATTY -- Mike Lasorsa got approval from the Beatty Town Board Wednesday to run the electrical line to the newly erected town clock.

The board also approved David Spicer's revised fence design for the town square park and the original plan for the general layout of features in the park.

Spicer had originally envisioned a solid stone wall around the perimeter of the park, but he said, even with his company donating the material, the cost would have been prohibitive -- something over $200,000.

The new wall design, for which he said he would get cost estimates, involves 21 stone pillars joined by chains linked to steel bollards.

The columns would be topped with lights similar to the antique street lamps that await installation along Main Street. He also suggested arched steel "Beatty Gateway Park" signs over the entrances.

Spicer further suggested including an old railroad locomotive in the park, which would tie in with the town's early railroad history.

Planner Cheryl Beeman from Nye County and Elaine Ezra of TerraSpectra Geomatics displayed and discussed a series of large maps of the Beatty area used in the master planning process.

These maps, which they seek to update and correct, will be on display for the next two weeks in the hallway of the Beatty town office. Interested residents are encouraged to visit the office, examine the maps and provide information about anything they find incorrect or incomplete.

The main land use map is based on an aerial photograph that is several years old, so some structures built since the photo was taken need to be added, and any that have changed use or been demolished need to be removed. There may also be other errors.

Some concern had been raised in the community about businesses wishing to operate topless enterprises, and Sheriff Tony Demeo was on hand to advise the board on how to address those concerns.

The board voted to follow the sheriff's advice and send a letter to his office and all county commissioners, stating that they are working on an ordinance covering this type of business. This would prevent anyone from being "grandfathered" in. They also voted to attach a copy of Lincoln County's ordinance as a model of what they want to enact.

The board approved the purchase of parking curbs for the community center, something that had been suggested by the county public works department. They also approved $264 to pay Pahrump Valley Disposal for refuse bins to be used in the river bed clean-up.

Teresa Sullivan was elected vice chairman of the board. There is still an opening for one additional member on the board.
