Camera catches would-be Bonnie and Clyde

Two Pahrump residents, Sabrina E. Durkee, 30, and her boyfriend Caleon McGriff, 26, were arrested Monday for allegedly robbing and attempting to set fire to the Flying Eagle Gas Station on Kellogg Road.

Nye County Sheriff's Office general assignment detectives were dispatched to the scene Monday morning for a report of burglary and arson.

Among the numerous items of evidence collected was a surveillance video showing the robbery.

Subsequent investigation identified Durkee's involvement in the burglary.

In addition to the suspect herself reportedly telling detectives of her involvement in the crime while they searched the home, detectives also found "numerous items of evidence relating to the burglary and arson," according to a sheriff's office press release.

According to Det. David Boruchowitz, several Molotov cocktails were found at the scene.

The officers further found marijuana and other drug paraphernalia reportedly belonging to Durkee and McGriff.

Durkee was arrested and booked on charges of first degree arson, burglary, grand larceny, possession of marijuana and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Her bail has been set at $110,632.

McGriff was arrested and booked on charges of possession of marijuana and conspiracy to commit a crime. His bail was set at $632.

Recording crime lands man in jail

Paul Hycz, 56, was arrested for impersonating an officer and intercepting wire communication after a joint investigation by the Nye County Sheriff's Office detectives division and street crimes unit discovered he was allegedly making phone calls under the guise of being a law enforcement officer.

According to the sheriff's office press release, Hycz allegedly called the Department of Motor Vehicles posing as an officer to get someone's address over a vehicle transaction.

In addition, Hycz called the sheriff's office several times and spoke to or attempted to speak to officers.

Since Hycz was recording the conversations on a digital tape recorder, however, that turned the calls into a Category D felony (Nevada is a two-party consent state where recording a conversation on the phone is concerned).

A search warrant executed on Hycz's residence at the Best Western/Wulfenstein's RV park revealed several recorded phone calls, including two to Sheriff Tony DeMeo and five other calls to officers, all recorded without their knowledge.

Hycz was not present at the time of the search because he was already in jail for the original arrest of impersonating a public officer.

His bail was set at $37,000.
