An offset head-on collision Saturday afternoon on Highway 160 approximately two miles north of Mesquite Avenue resulted in one person's death and two others being severely injured.

The accident occurred at approximately 4 p.m. and shut down Highway 160 in both directions for approximately two hours.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper R.W. Hubbs, a green Mercury Cougar, driven by Bob Hall, was traveling northbound and attempting to pass a vehicle in front of it when it collided head-on with a white Oldsmobile Alero.

Hall sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lee Hall, the passenger, showed no immediate signs of injury.

The as-yet-unidentified man driving the Alero was transported to Desert View Regional Medical Center and then taken to Las Vegas.

The Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Service was dispatched to the scene at 4:15 p.m. and found all three victims entrapped in their vehicles.

Both cars were crushed to the extent that it took what's known as a "prolonged extrication" to get the victims free. Rescue workers also had to remove the roof from the Alero to get that victim out.

Fire Chief Scott Lewis expressed gratitude to the Nevada Department of Transportation, which gave the grant money to fund the extrication equipment.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene including the Nye County Sheriff's Office, Nevada Highway Patrol, Engine 4 of the Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Service and PVFRS EMT personnel.
