Candidates night

Nye Goldseekers meet

The Nye Goldseekers will hold a monthly meeting at 1 p.m. July 20 in Room B of the Bob Ruud Community Center.

The speaker will be Mike Dix who has a lot of local mining experience and will bring gold and uranium specimens.

The gold seekers have been successful enough to possibly discuss the first filing of a claim.

Inyo County election information

Independence, Calif. -- Mary Roper, Inyo County clerk reminds voters there are governing board member positions up for election in all seven school districts in Inyo County, Trona Joint Unified School District, Northern Inyo Local Hospital District, Southern Inyo Healthcare District and the Inyo-Mono Resource Conservation District.

The date of the Presidential General Election is Nov. 4.

The filing period for these positions open July 14 and extends until Aug. 8.

Forms will be available beginning July 14 at the county clerk's office, school district offices and at the business offices of Northern Inyo Local Hospital District and Southern Inyo Healthcare District.

Self defense class for women

Kiwanis yard sale

The Kiwanis Club of Pahrump will hold a yard sale 8-3 p.m. July 19 at 1601 E. Basin Ave., Suites 103 and 104.

Volunteer training Nathan Adelson

Nathan Adelson Hospice will hold volunteer training classes 8-5 p.m. July 21 and 22 in the hospice conference room, 1480 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 900.

The classes cover particulars needed for working with patients, their families, running errands and office work.

Quilts 4 Cancer meets

The Quilts 4 Cancer volunteers will meet for a "Christmas in July" at 10 a.m. July 26.

Volunteers will gather to make homemade stockings for Christmas and will need help filling them. The goal is 250 stockings. With each filled stocking a gift will be given.

There will be no host food and beverages. Please show group discount for the meeting room.

Finished items will be given to the Senior Center for Meals on Wheels recipients, Nathan Adelson Hospice, Evergreen Nursing Home and the VFW for home-bound veterans.

Salvation Army summer reading

The Salvation Army will have a summer reading program for struggling and/or reluctant readers for kindergarten through middle school students 1-2:30 p.m. July 22, 23, 24 at the Salvation Army, 721 S. Buol Road.

Recital Showcase

The Artistic Centre will present the annual showcase at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on July 26 in the Pahrump Valley High School auditorium.

The show is entitled "Celebrating 10 Years of Dance Through Music Genre" and the program includes dance numbers in tap, jazz, combo, hip-hop, ballet and pointe.

There will be a gymnastics exhibition.

The Pahrump Valley Republican Women will have the annual fashion show at 1 p.m. Aug. 3 in the Pahrump Nugget.

Nye County Animal Advisory Committee

Nye County is accepting applications for people wishing to serve on the Nye County Animal Advisory Committee.

Members will assist in drafting new animal ordinances and hear complaints.

Summer/fall rummage sale

The Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold a rummage sale 8-4 p.m. on Aug. 1 and 8-1 p.m. Aug. 2 at the church, 1300 E. Highway 372.

There will be lots of clothing, linens, crafts, books, household items and appliances.

Shoes and socks donations

For the Love of Kids and Bikes is taking shoes and socks donations at the Short Branch Saloon in Crystal.

The donation of a pair of shoes will get the donor a steak dinner and a pair of socks will get the donor a meatloaf dinner.

The drive ends Aug. 2.

The Short Branch opens at 10 a.m. and is closed on Wednesday and Thursday.

GNJ Family Life Center is offering employment and training-related services to youth ages 14-21.

The Pahrump Valley High School class of '88 plans to celebrate a 20-year reunion 7 p.m. Aug. 16 instead of Aug. 9 at the TPC Golf Course instead of the Flamingo in Las Vegas.

Shakespeare made simple

The Pahrump Community Library and the Tumbleweed Tales Society are sponsoring two workshops for Shakespeare fans.

"Shakespeare Readers Theater" will be 4:30-6 p.m. every Tuesday at the library, where the group reads and discusses Shakespeare's work.

"Shakespeare Made Simple" is 10 a.m.-noon every third Saturday of the month.

Sessions are free and are offered to help everyone unlock Shakespeare's language.

This is a stand alone project not affiliated with any other project or organization. All photos taken to Wal-Mart will stay at Wal-Mart.

Retired/senior program

The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help.

This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such as shopping, medical appointments, etc.

RSVP reimburses volunteers 24 cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers.

Additionally, volunteers receive training, annual seminar education and appreciation award dinners.

Shows are held Saturdays at McCullough Arena.

Donations for Quilts for Cancer

Quilts for Cancer volunteers have worked all year to make Christmas stockings for homebound seniors in Pahrump. Two hundred plus stockings need to be filled with nutritious snacks.

Volunteers are also working to have a hand-made gift to accompany the stocking which will be distributed in December.

The food pantry at No to Abuse is empty.

Frazier Furniture is holding a food drive offering up to 10 percent discounts on any stock purchase.

For each item donated, you will receive a 1 percent discount up to a maximum of 10 percent.
