A couple weeks ago at a No to Abuse/Resource Center (NTA/RC) board meeting, Ron Frazier discovered that the food pantry was empty.

As a long-time supporter of NTA/RC, he wasn't going to let it stay that way.

So, he decided to hold a food drive, which has received good response.

"For every food item they give to the food drive, they can receive from 1 to 10 percent off any item in stock in the store," said Frazier. "There are approximately 900 people who live here that need the food." The discount does not include special orders.

The food drive will run through July 31, with a certificate given by the store which will reflect the percentage you can receive.

If you are a business or individual who plans to participate in the drive, contact the store to be included in the weekly pickup cycle. Frazier will pick up all donated items and deliver them to the resource center.

On July 19, the main drive will be held in front of Wal-Mart with a representative from Frazier on site to collect donations.

Clelia Garrity, director of NTA/RC, said, "Frazier has a long history with NTA/RC. As a new member of the board of directors; he is committed to making sure this doesn't happen again."

She added, "We hope to use his generosity as a starting point to provide a more robust ability to give food to those who are in need."

Other areas to be looked to for help are the faith-based organizations such as the Interfaith Council. Garrity also plans to arrange with groups such as Rotary to give a presentation about joining the board of directors.

The NTA/RC will begin asking recipients to participate in food distribution and other possible areas.

The facility receives a monthly shipment from the Department of Agriculture, but it does not meet all the need in the valley.

Garrity said, "Once Ron heard about the food pantry being empty, he took it and ran. His initiative is astounding, he is a great guy."

She closed by saying "I plan to forge a strong partnership with the organization and be a resource to the community and vice versa. Another activity I hope to begin is a health and wellness program for recipients.

If you have questions about the food drive, Frazier Furniture can be contacted by calling 775-727-3600, or if you would to donate other items in addition to food, NTA/RC can be contacted directly at 775-751-1118.
